Seahawks duo blitzed by Bush backlash
Seattle PI ^ | 9-6-07 | Jim Moore

KIRKLAND -- Are you still fans of Matt Hasselbeck and Mack Strong after they visited President Bush last week in Bellevue? Or have their political leanings turned you against them?

The Seahawks quarterback and fullback gave the 43rd president a No. 43 jersey with his name on it at a $1,000-a-plate fundraiser for Rep. Dave Reichert at the Hyatt.

At the time, Hasselbeck called it a thrill and said it was a win-win, this opportunity to meet the president and get out of a team meeting.

But as soon as he saw the picture of the two players with Bush, Gary Wright, the team's vice president of administration, said he was concerned about negative reaction.

Maybe in really red Republican states, it would not have been a big deal. But Washington is a blue state, and deep, deep Democratic blue in King County. So objections were raised, and Hasselbeck heard them and read them. He got nasty voice mails, e-mails and text messages.

"I had no idea," Hasselbeck said.

One guy told him: "I hate you, I'll never wear your jersey, I'll never like the Seahawks again."

"Huh?" Hasselbeck thought. "Seriously?"

"Politics can be very mean and dirty," he said. "The things politicians say about each other, and what activists say, I had a brief glimpse of that for a couple of days.

"If I ever had any questions about whether I wanted to run for office, I now know the answer -- I don't."

As a quarterback, he's used to getting booed. "But this was a whole new level," he said. "I was very surprised how mean (they were)."

"Asked how he felt about the Bush presidency, Hasselbeck said: "I caused such a ruckus holding up a jersey. I'm not educated enough to have a public statement about that. People want to hear educated opinions."

Hasselbeck IS smart.

“See “Dixie Chicks” as Exhibit A on this one.”

You cannot possibly compare what the Dixie Chicks said about our Commander in Chief during wartime in another country to Hassleback giving the President a jersey, can you?

It’s pretty much the case.

The IAW, for all the talk of partnership with Boeing, put a full size bronze statue of picketers rallying around, with little children, around a burn barrel.

No joke.

My cousin is a City Councilman in Everett. He was once asked, by the local Democrat Party, in an interview for endorsement, what his stand was on Peak Oil. Not kidding.

Washington State, from essentially Lake Chelan west to the sea is sort of a farm for the insane. It’s semi-functional, to a point, and the inmates are allowed to travel up and down the coast, which is essentially part of the same collective asylum.

The middle class is running, not walking from Seattle. Public school system is beyond fixing. When the Supe tries to close schools (34!) to stop the flow of red ink, the moonbats RAGE in a way that should be filmed and put on Animal Planet. The Superintendent position here has been a revolving door. The last semi-effective one was a Republican ex-General, who ended up dying prematurely in office of cancer.

The other massive joke around here is that there is zero rapid transit, and we have the third worst traffic in the nation, first worst per capita. The first time they tried to put in light rail, they voted in a levy of $2BB. What did that buy: studies. Not kidding. Not a shovel full of dirt was turned, not one.

So, the next time it came up, there was healthy skepticism. Seattle tried to extend their pathetic monorail system (less than one mile of track, and it cost $4.00 per rider, up and back) which was a legacy of the World’s Fair. When they built it, the morons who designed it let themselves be cowed by one of the building owners, who forced the city to build the tracks too clost together in one place. As such, two trains can’t pass at that point, or they jam together.

This happened last year, resulting in only one track and one train being in service now.

Truly, the only other places more feckless and insane politically are probably Providence, RI and Philadelphia, PA.

I say that, right? At least Philly has a rapid transit system.

Even cities in China have rapid transit, as does Portland, OR and San Jose, CA.

Sorry for the rant, but if my family situation were different, I’d get the hell out.

The problem with the PacNW is that it is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. Kiss of death, though, because it seems that liberals are somehow attracted to seawater. You find them predominantly located at the coast, after all.

These fans are so stupid.

If I limited the movies I watched by their political affiliation; I would never go to the movies.

Sure.

But when you're an NFL player -- or any other public figure, for that matter -- it's important to keep in mind that you're marketing yourself to a population that includes an awful lot of A-holes, and an awful lot of people who are borderline retarded.

No. You can not compare their actions. But what you can compare is FANS reactions.

I am a huge Metallica fan. And if James Hetfield came out and Endorsed Hillary Clinton for President I would have a very difficult time with it and it would cause me great pain. But I wouldn't send him death threats, boycott them, or burn my Metallica collection.

But a liberal so consumed by BDS would do that if someone they were of a fan of endorsed Bush.

Poor Hasselbeck. He’s getting a crash course in the vile, loathsome, satanic nature of liberalism. I hope he understands what he’s seeing.

Sure I can. Both of these courses of action exposed the person/people in question to a lot of grief from their prospective customers.

It is more likely that this mope headed over to DU or the DailyKOS to post that he faced down Hasselback “in public” with a flurry of logical statements.

Hasselback will be portrayed as being sheepish and apologetic. Hasselback will then be said to have proclaimed his liberal epiphany in a private moment to this twirp.

I guess I’ll have to take an unpopular stand. I was surprised when I saw the picture in the local paper; not because of the personal politics of Hasselbeck and Strong, but because of the implied endorsement of the Republican Party by the Seahawks. If I owned the team, I certainly would support and encourage my employees to get involved in the community, political activism not excluded. That said, I would have serious concerns about my employees demonstrating what amounts to my organization’s tacit support for any one group; not only will it alienate fans, it could also jeopardize the sometimes tenuous relationships between team ownership and local and state government. Put another way, what if this had occurred at a Hillary Clinton fund raiser?

Don’t hate Metallica for their politics, hate them for the total garbage they’ve been calling music for the past decade.

I’m a born-and-raised Seattle refugee. One of the happiest moments in my life was seeing Snoqualmie Pass in the rear-view mirror, knowing I wouldn’t be back (even to visit) for years.

I love the West Coast, but King County is nuts. I’ll probably move to Southern Oregon (still conservative) when I can.

I seriously think these Bush haters are deranged. Taking your your anger out on Hasselbeck, a football player who happens to meet the POTUS and takes a picture with him? Doesn’t anyone even have respect for the office, at the very least?

This is Seattle, right? They should do a commercial there - THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON DRUGS.
