Recovered debris from TWA 800

More than six years after retired United Airline captain Ray Lahr launched his Freedom of Information Act petition into the fate of TWA Flight 800, the FBI has shown him –likely by accident – one seriously smoking gun.

The Boeing 747 blew up off the coast of Long Island on July 17, 1996. One of the FBI documents received recently by Lahr and his attorney details a communication that took place six days after the crash:

"On Tuesday, July 23, 1996, a representative from the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) advised [the FBI] that after a visual analysis of both the videotape as well as a number of still photographs taken from various portions of the tape, the phenomenon captured by [redacted] appeared to be consistent with the exhaust plume from a MANPAD [Man-portable air-defense] missile."

"The FBI guy who looked at this must not have read it, or not have realized what it would reveal, Otherwise he would have redacted most of it as before."

Jet fuel (kerosene) is extremely stable and the 747 is the most perfect aircraft ever designed. imo

Yes, all of them.
I, like my USMC friends, am not an ex-TWA’er but a former-TWA’er and that makes all the difference. Those killed were my brothers and sisters(fellow employees) and my charges(passengers). Every one is remembered and mourned by some of us. No, I won’t get over it.

I don’t know from conspiracy and cover-up and think it unlikely that the story will change much unless somebody steps up with some pretty huge evidence. I do know that I will never stop lamenting lost friends and the loss of the airline that was the “love of my life”.

You left out the Fort Dix Six, I think that it was called that..they were training in my daughter’s backyard in Pennsylvania. They were planning to kill soldiers at Fort Dix, one of them delivered pizza to Fort Dix and had access to the base.

I saw that video too within a day or so after the crash. Nothing was ever really said about it, and I’ve never seen the clip again. I don’t buy into conspiracy theories. I don’t think Clinton would of targeted the plane. Its more likely a cover up. This happened just a few months before the 1996 election. If this is actually terrorism, then Its more likely this was covered up so as not to affect Clinton’s re-election. He wasn’t exactly considered a millitary kind of President. This would of killed his re-election. The video did look like a projectile hitting it, but I remember there was something about it that left me wondering if it wasn’t an optical illusion, and it was actually debris falling from the plane just before it broke up. I only saw the video once, and 11 years has clouded some of the recollection. I can’t say I saw I missile, but that video sure looked like it.

But nothing like as embarrassing as the video produced by the NTSB that tried to explain how a heavily laden 747 that was lumbering along at best rate of climb would, after having broken in two just forward of the wings, continue to climb for over 3000 more feet before falling into the ocean.

I doubt a shoulder launched missile would of brought down, in that fashion a 747. First the range would of been extreme, especially for a Soviet, but even American missile. Second, it would of tracked on the exhaust plume of one of the four engines. If it managed to hit the engine, losing the engine woud not of immediately brought the plane down. There is a fair chance the aircraft could of returned with a engine gone. Happens all the time. Anyways, there would of been radio communication, and cockpit voice of the pilots dealing with an engine failure. How long have video cameras been in existence? Do you think if some Islamic idiots did this they would not of filmed and claimed credit?

The aircraft was not fully loaded, either fuel or passengers. All aircraft are balanced for and aft. When the 747 had the front nose blown off, it lost tons of balance, making the tail heavier. The nose rises. Engines keep turning, the aircraft climbs. Boeing center fuel tanks have blown up before this event.

Agreed. At the time (1996) I assumed clinton would suppress this due to an election in a couple of months, but after seeing the Oklahoma University attempted bombing evolve on this forum a while back it does seem to be a clear understanding between government and the media, at a non-political level, to control coverage.

The AA crash in Queens in late 2001 is another example which might qualify.

Maybe so but with the 24/7 cable shows after all these years I have not seen or heard ONE of the HUNDREDS of eye witnesses to this plume from a rocket or missle on any show.There were hundreds of eye witnesses ,where are they ?

It wasn’t a manpad, it was test of an anti-missile system..... thus the supression. Would have killed off a big company the defense department depends on.

So it's your contention that the Defense Department tested an anti-missile system by firing one into the busiest commercial air corridor in the world? Just how stupid do you think the military is?

Especially important to me were the 21 wonderful people from my small town in PA. who perished that night...14 fine boys and girls from the HS French club, and their seven chaperones.

I live in Williamsport and I get choked up everytime I pass the memorial erected next to the Montoursville High School.
