Stay Away - Someone convince Mitt Romney he shouldn't talk about Vietnam.

Dear Ann Romney:

This newspaper devoted a lot of space last month to a series about your husband and his run for president. I'd hate to see all that grunt work come to naught. So please get him to stop talking about Vietnam, OK? The Romney men have a genetic predisposition toward self-destruction on that topic. First, Papa George blows up his campaign in 1968 by claiming to have been "brainwashed" by the US military. Now here comes Mitt, in this paper, talking about his own, completely imaginary, experience in Southeast Asia.

"I was supportive of my country. I longed in many respects to actually be in Vietnam and be representing our country there and in some ways it was frustrating not to feel like I was there as part of the troops that were fighting in Vietnam."

Not only a reminder Mitt didn’t serve in the military during Viet nam but spent a nice peaceful 2 years in France.

also a reminder his 5 sons in their 20s - 30s have not served in the military.

Heh, if Precious was in gay Par-ee in ‘68, he was in a war zone. I’m not going to go after his kids if they haven’t served, that’s their choice (and how often have we seen the sons of pols entering the military solely to enhance the reps of their parents — a la Gore, Jr. with his father). Only if they start bashing the military will they deserve scorn.

Mutt was going to sign up but he was brainwashed by the French to surrender before he started.

That pic reminds me of why there are way too many usually sensible female FReepers who go all ga-ga over this guy as Bill Clinton’s female groupies did. Remember, ladies, it may have a pretty exterior, but the interior is like an old termite-laden house.

I live around 3 miles from Marine Corp Recruit Depot, San Diego. I don’t think those boys would last 5 mins. there.

One of his sons and family live here, he is in Real Estate.
While Hunter’s son is a Marine Capt. on his 3rd tour in the war.

What I see is closer to an army squad, not everyone enlists but when you have a crowd like that, you would think that at least one would be attracted to the military.

Unless of course the Romney men are deliberately opposed to serving under arms in an American uniform.

What is their men’s relation to the United states, except for business and power, has any Romney male ever served? (In the American military)

Good grief. Someone tell the man to stop sounding like John Kerry.

Much appreciation for all the good guys who truly did serve in Vietnam.

Well, I’ve been getting it from the Mittwitts for a long time now, so I don’t care. I think, if anything, it’s truly a shame about Romney. If he had some bonafide substance and proud accomplishments he left behind in MA, he’d be the most formidable candidate we’ve ever put up — but he’s not. It’s too bad those sensible FReepers (of both genders) can’t see past the face. If he looked like Phil Gramm with the same non-accomplishments, he’d be dismissed faster than the contents of one’s stomach after a weekend bender.

I just don’t know. Those boys are my generation, and quite a few of us never served (although in my case, health problems made that an impossibility, despite having my father, uncle, granduncle, both grandfathers, even GGG grandfathers in the Revolution and serving under Gen’l Jackson in the military).

Our governor just sent her son off to Army boot camp. It was his decision and she supports him. It had nothing to do with politics. Her poll numbers are in the upper 80's as it is.

If you start looking at the Romneys you will see that something is going on in their refusal to ever wear the American uniform, it seems something that their family line has decided on and enforced for many, many generations. They make their wealth and they campaign for power, but they will never serve. In modern Republican history, they are known as an anti war family representing the liberal branch of the party. I know that, but Gov. Palin has nothing to prove. I’m talking about suspicious anti-military/anti-war pols that have done so. Gore, Sr. was a chickenhawk on Vietnam and he pushed Jr. into service to make himself look more “pro-military” (again, trying to have it both ways). It finally blew up in his face.

Some things that bother me about Gore is that he went in on a two year enlistment, that meant combat arms, not Journalist.

The army did not send you to Vietnam 7 months before your discharge, and in Gore’s case 5 months before your early out.

Although early outs were common then, even “Project Transition” for those that remember, which was a program where you worked in a job for six weeks before your discharge started.
