Please see following posts for URL links to the discussion threads for
Part 1 and Part 2 of the seriees.

All commentary regarding personal experience, family tales of WWII,
and critique of how Burns (and PBS) handles topics are welcome.

Hopefully the threads on the seven episodes will serve as
guides when this large documentary becomes required viewing in
high schools.
Comments on how Burns handled the documenatry (positive,
negative, or neutral) will come in handy when "the younger
generation" sees the series. Especially if Burns takes a
"Smithsonian" tact to some topics...leaving people to wonder
"who the good guys were" during the epic struggle.

and to check for airing times of “The War” on local PBS stations...

URL to check listing for local PBS stations:
http://www.pbs.org/thewar/broadcast_schedule.htm

DO BE FOREWARNED:
One poster on the West Coast last night said that when they tuned into
their PBS station...SEAN PENN was on the air!

So, maybe put your welder glasses on and turn down the volume in
case your local station is putting somebody like Sean Penn on...”for balance”.

You have been warned!

On at leasst some PBS stations, each part of “The War” has been rebroadcast,
i.e., here in Mid-Missouri, Part 1 aired at 7PM Central, then was rebroadcast
at 9PM.

This might help late-arrivers or folks with VCRs.

And how PBS handles it,that sean penn interview prior to, was classic PBS.

On the evening of 9-11-01, I returned to my apartment in West Los
Angeles, hoping to catch "The Evening Business Report" broadcast
each weeknight on KCET, the PBS superstation in LA.
I wanted to see if the destruction of both WTC towers, the destruction of
part of The Pentagon, and an attack on world travel and commmerce
(stymied as best could be done on Flight 93), was going to simply
melt down the US and/or the world economy.

I got home in time, flip on the TV...
And here's FREAKIN' BILL MOYERS and some nice, low-key guy
(ex-pat from Afghanistan) basically saying "Please, don't nuke
my country".
In other words: America has a second Pearl Harbor..."we at PBS gotta'
make sure the world is safe for Muslims!!!!"

At that moment, I was very happy that I'd never FREELY given PBS
a bloody red cent.

I did have compassion for the ex-pat Afghan. His home country has
been through h-ll and back.

But PBS...never a freely-given cent!!!!!!!!!!

“i can’t remember the other one i think it was about a great flood here

If Burns did a documentary on a large US flood, I’m afraid I missed it.

But...maybe you are thinking about the episode “Fatal Flood” on PBS’s
“American Experience” series.
It was a pretty decent documentary; plenty amazing how widespread it was.

Burns may be a bit PC at times, but imo thusfar the documentary has been both well done and fair. ....and he leaves no doubt whatsoever about who the good guys were. The footage from Guadalcanal was tremendous. Tonight I suspect we'll see some footage of P-51 Mustangs taking on the Luftwaffe while escorting B-17s in their daytime bomb over Germany.

What amazes me is anyone who understands what the hell WWII was about should be extra supportive of fighting islamo facism today. Sure the names change, the methods, but it’s the same kind of evil.

Sean Peeinn.

Wasn’t his daddy involved with subversives in the 1940s, and a strong supporter of the murderous Joseph Stalin?

Just curious.

By the way....Eff U Sean Penn!

I'm convinced most of the people you're referring to are so blinded by partisanship and (unfounded) hatred for the President and the GOP they're incapable of seeing the Islamofascist evil for what it is. ...and therefore aren't supporting the present war. I'd be willing to bet the farm if the current President were a Democrat and were fighting the WOT in the exact same manner as President Bush almost every last one of them would support it. They appear incapable of supporting the efforts of a GOP President under any circumstances.

“My dad was an Aviation Machinists Mate, never talked about it,...”

You do have to pry the past/truth out of some of The Greatest Generation,
that is for sure.

Sometimes, I think it is just innate modesty, not wanting to stand out
too much from “the other guy”.

Sometimes, I think it’s from religional training (and I’m NOT bashing
religional/moral sentiment). You do hear in “The War” and other documentaries
how some recruits had to get over a general church-born ethos about
“Thou Shalt Not Kill” and get their heads wrapped around
“Thou Shalt Not MURDER” as the more accurate bit of theology.
I do really like the old “Sergeant York” for how it dealt with this
dilemma, albeit in WWI.

Also, I suspect some of the returning veterans weren’t ready to tell their
small children and wives what “the real deal” was during their service.

Too bad some President or other moral figure (Billy Graham?) didn’t
tell them: Set a date when you are going to come clean with your loved ones.
(Provided the veteran thought that s/he and the family could handle the
stress of the mental imagery)

Maybe when all your children have been married at least 10 years.
Or when you want to make sure they do their duty...and don’t repeat
some of your “wrong turns”.

The Civil War was without a doubt the best documentary on that war I have ever seen.
