Bloomberg Lambastes Gun Law That Giuliani Calls ‘Sensible'
NY Sun ^ | September 25, 2007 | RUSSELL BERMAN

Mayor Bloomberg may be unwilling to criticize his predecessor directly, but he is leaving little doubt about his distaste for Mayor Giuliani's newfound courtship of the gun lobby.

"Rudy Giuliani can speak for himself," Mr. Bloomberg told reporters yesterday at City Hall before launching into a full-throated defense of policy positions that the former mayor has recently disavowed or opposed.

Mr. Bloomberg was responding to Mr. Giuliani's comments last week to the National Rifle Association, in which he distanced himself from a lawsuit against firearm manufacturers that he initiated as mayor and which the city is still pressing. Mr. Giuliani also voiced support for a gun law that Mr. Bloomberg has mounted a national campaign to overturn.

The Republican presidential hopeful said on Friday that the lawsuit "has taken several turns and several twists that I don't agree with."

Contradicting Mr. Giuliani, Mr. Bloomberg said the lawsuit "has not changed at all" since the city filed it in 1999. "We believe that it's a good case and we hope to win," Mr. Bloomberg said.

The lawsuit accuses gun manufacturers of failing to supervise adequately sales practices that have led to large numbers of guns winding up in the hands of criminals. Mr. Bloomberg offered an equally staunch condemnation of the Tiahrt amendment, which Mr. Giuliani had described as "sensible" to the NRA on Friday.

The legislation, named for the Republican congressman who sponsored it, has been inserted into congressional spending bills since 2003 and places restrictions on how gun trace data can be used. "The Tiahrt amendment is something that is not in the interest of people who want to be safe in this country," Mr. Bloomberg said. "It's an outrage."

The city contends that the amendment ties the hands of police in the city's fight against illegal guns...

I am shocked!! There is someone out there who is an even BIGGER TWERP on the 2A then Roooday. If “Roooday” runs as a democrat he has a far better chance of the nomination than he does running as a GOP candidate!

I hope Bloomberg is prosecuted on federal RICO charges. He is trying to extend his city law enforcement jurisdiction across state lines. He has hired people to harass gun shops all over the U.S. It's time to put him on the defensive.

Virginia did just that...the legislature passed a law which would make his sending any more idiots to Virginia to try and make straw purchases a felony unless it’s done in conjunction with local law enforcement.

Rudy has done nothing to distance himself from the most disturbing gun position he holds.

In this Feb 2000 interview on Meet the Press, Rudy said, "...a person who wants to possess a handgun should pass a written test, should be able to pass a physical test in the actual use of the gun, and should have to demonstrate good moral character and a reason to have the gun. That those should be...essentially there should be a uniform law passed by Congress that says that every state has to administer that...."

He went on to say, "...and I've been arguing for that since at least 1980."

My questions are, why should I have to show a reason to have my handguns, or to buy more of them, and where does the Congress get the power to pass such a law?

I think the whole notion that I should have to show a reason for buying a handgun inverts the natural relationship of a citizen and his government. The government should have to show a reason why I should NOT buy a handgun, rather than requiring me to show a reason why I should. A person who holds the opposite conviction just has a fundamentally different view of government from mine, and I can't support that view.

I have met Mike Bloomberg, and he is, (IMHO) the single most arrogant human alive. More arrogant than Donald Trump, more than Kim Jong Il, more than Rosie O'Donnell, even more than Ben Affleck.

The 2nd Armored Cavalry couldn't put him on the defensive. (but I'd certainly enjoy seeing them try)

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million ‘educated’ people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:

Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent

Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent

Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!

It will never happen here?.................. I bet the Aussies said that too!

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.

You won’t see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information.

Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.

Take note my fellow Americans, before it’s too late!

The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them of this history lesson.

With Guns..........We Are “Citizens”.
Without Them........We Are “Subjects”.

During W.W.II the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED!

The Second Amendment is not a matter of interpretation, it’s a matter of fact. Not believing that and pressing for a total ban will warrant a large mob.

Then there comes a reason for a few more groups like how the NRA does licensing for firearms. The only thing I agree with Rudy pertaining to that is getting licensed by an organization completely independent of the federal government, to demonstrate competency in the safe handling and usage of a firearm. If a person doesn't know what sight picture is, then they could fire quite wrong.

That the Repub Party has not thrown Bloomberg out of the Party, nor has Bush condemned Bloomberg is yet another reason why the Repub Party is hurting for donor money.

Best believe it is. Remember, however, that “W” still doesn’t seem to have a clue why the AWB was bad legislation, and why so many of us opposed it, and still do. There are Freepers all over the place who still call us “dogmatic”, RKBA is not an issue to them, and they see us as obstructionists for standing fast on principle. Bloomie and Rudy are big city boys, and they are just simply different. “W” is sort of in between, but they all are willing to justify the means by the hoped for end.
Every damned dictatorship ever born on this Earth was spawned, and justified, in the name of assuring social order. I’d rather risk anarchy, personally.
