Best Bad News Possible (Bye-Tax Ememption for mortgate)
Political Mavens ^ | 27 SEPT 2007 | Mike Long

John Dingell proposes not only a huge gas tax but also ENDING THE HOME MORTGAGE DEDUCTION for “large” homes–all this to fight global warming change. (Pause. Laugh. Roll eyes.) Now, Dingell’s not serious about any of this–he said as much over the summer on the Sunday talk shows. He says he just wants to get the discussion going–and, if my memory is correct, he also said that he wants to show others that it’s impossible to pass this kind of stuff.

But just now he’s acting serious about it. As a conservative/libertarian, this is wonderful news to me. There is no quicker way to end the public’s acceptance of the many lies about climate change than to demand we both change our behavior and pay to fix the problem. Suddenly, doubts about global warming will be far more numerous, and only the most politically suicidal of Democrats will continue to spout their scare-mongering rhetoric.

So thanks, John Dingell. Thanks much! Oh–and I guess we can take this as a sign that at 80-something years old, you are no longer interested in representing the auto industry in your district, right? And that you’ll be retiring soon?

Wow. The good news just keeps rollin’ in.

The home mortgage interest deduction should be eliminated, but not for this silly reason.

Dingus has made a shrewd move. His proposed legislation shows the horrors the GW crowd wants to inflict on all of us. He’s doing it to force his fellow DemonRats to rein in the hysteria.

***So thanks, John Dingell. Thanks much! ***

I also remember it was Dingell who resigned from the NRA board of directors and voted for Clinton’s assault rifle ban.

I haven’t forgotten it was HIS vote that got the bill passed.

Not selectively, either.

Moreover, many economic distortions, once introduced, can only be removed at the cost of almost as many unfair outcomes as they introduced in the first place.

Indeed, as should all other credits and deductions, along with the regressive tax rate. Flat tax, no exceptions. Let the deadbeats pay for some of what they're stealing from the taxpayers for a change.

If any congress-critter is REALLY interested in getting a discussion on taxes started, all they need to do is pass a law outlawing employers withholding of taxes from employees pay checks. The first time wage earners realize that they need to write a check to the federal government every quarter when they file their estimated taxes, you can bet a discussion will ensue!

I'm with you all the way except for this statement. Keeping MY money with a deduction is not stealing from the taxpayers. "Targeted" deductions and exemptions are definitely not right, but it is MY and YOUR money, not the government's. Keeping it is not stealing. The stealing comes when the government takes money from taxpayers who do not have the exemption.

Sorry - my statement concerning the 'deadbeats' stealing from the taxpayers was NOT in reference to those (which includes me) taking advantage of the various deductions in the tax code. It was, instead, in reference to the regressive tax rate that puts a large proportional burden on the earners in this country while letting the deadbeats and slackers get by without paying their fair share (or worse, by giving the lazy "earned-income credit").

In other words, the stealing occurs when government takes a higher proportion of the income from half the working population and uses it to buy the votes of the other half.

I know a BIG lib that lives in a BIG house (probably 4k+) all by herself.

I’m going to ask her what she thinks of the government deciding that her house is “too big” and would like to punish her for it.

Of course, this penalty will not affect those who don’t have a mortgage, or for whom the mortgage deduction doesn’t mean much. You can bet Dingus isn’t affected.

global warming change. (Pause. Laugh. Roll eyes.)

For many years, I was sceptical about global warming. But what me 100% certain that it is all a hoax is when the left recently changed the name from "global warming" to "climate change" in a blatantly obvious attempt to cover their @sses.
