A group of Filipinos and Filipino-Americans is preparing a 500 million-dollar class suit against ABC Network in the United States in response to a slur against Philippine medical schools and Filipino medical professionals, aired in the premiere episode of the fourth season of Desperate Housewives.
In that episode, the character Susan Mayer (played by actress Teri Hatcher) questioned the credentials of her gynecologist over a disputed diagnosis. Mayer said she wanted to check the doctors diploma to make sure it didnt come from some med school in the Philippines.
The class suit is being filed by the Northern California chapter of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA).
Two weeks since the controversial episode aired on television, Filipino Americans have persisted in their protests, saying the networks apology sent to ABS-CBNs North American News Bureau by email is not enough.
Sending a message One Filipino lawyer said the class suit is needed to protect the reputation and credibility of Filipino doctors.
The reputations of doctors are affected, their income is affected and this is a major damage inflicted not only on them but also the universities in the Philippines, said lawyer Ted Laguatan.
According to opthalmologist Tony Villanueva, the slur affects not just Filipinos but all ethnic groups.
Kahit kaninong ethnic group, hindi tama ang sinabi niya, because we are here as equals and were just as smart as anybody else.
For others, the class suit is about telling TV producers that ethnic slurs can have serious consequences.
Whats important here is that this is sending a message to the other producers, the other stations that if you do this, this is whats going to happen, said lawyer Rodel Rodis.

U. S. Constitution.
First Amendment.
Case Dismssed.
That was in Maryland, decades ago, and things might differ where you are, but I'd take my chances with a Phillipine doctor over the current crop of medisocial jihadi Carribean medical school fugitives any day.
So, sue Susan Mayer in a fictional court, and she can pay off in fictional money.
ITMT, I’m just going to sit back and watch, while munching my monkey-leg-on-a-stick.
“Flips”? I’ve read lots of your posts and think you seem like a decent person, but this is uncool.
I think this lawsuit is dumb as rocks, but no need to name-call Filipinos because some numbnuts amongst them decided to be reactionary idiots.
If they get even close to court they will get an expose of Philippine medical schools for their troubles. For good or ill.
Can you imagine the windfall for Republicans, conservatives and anybody else slander at the altar of PC/Democrat Correctness? Of course I don't support this but one would need to fight fire with fire if it came down to it.
Really? What kind of trouble? You people are racists!
However, the Philippines does not have much to be proud of. When you have little to be proud of, and then some guy makes a mockery of even that, can see how that could get to you.

How dare you call me a raciest, jackass! I did not say anything regarding Philippine Medical Schools or the Philippine people. You sue someone in the public eye and it gets all over the press, the people filing this suit better know this.

Damn AL Baby you are playera
I made a bad ethnic joke. So, as a an American of Polish and Italian heritage, make me an offer I can't understand. ;-)
Yeah you are racist! Many posters here are racists. Please don't compare educated Filipinos coming to America for greener pasture with illegals sneaking via the southern borders.
