I spent the week end roaming San Diego County - I’d cut them loose in the same breath as LA.

Oh please - don’t cut off ALL of Los Angeles County. i.e.,
we on the Palos Verdes Peninsula are all conservative but
have no voice. Due to the re-arranging of districts before,
our State Senator is Ed Vincent, big democrat in Inglewood
who pays no attention to us at all - never once visited and,
the others aren’t too swift except for Dana Rohrabacher -
but then he’s in Orange County.

Save us!

Has this every happened before?

Well Maine was part of Massachusetts until 1820, when it was admitted as a new state simultaneously with the new state of Missouri, to keep the balance in the US Senate between Slave and Free States (the 'Missouri Compromise'). Maine was a 'Department' of Massachusetts, and voted in the 18 - teens for separation from Massachusetts. The Massachusetts legislature finally agreed in 1819.

Technically West Virginia voted to leave Virginia in 1861, and the Virginia legislature voted to agree. The catch was that only the Virginia legislators who were loyal to the Union attended the session, and they were essentially entirely residents of West Virginia.

Texas, formerly an independent nation, by the terms of its treaty of annexation, can vote to split into as many as five states, possibly without Congressional approval (this is disputed).

You’d best watch your neighbors, I’ve met some flaming liberals up there on the hill.

What makes you think the unshaded counties which vote democrat would go along with this scheme ??

For example Santa Barbara county or Monterey county?

Sonoma county is the same. I was surprised to see it in the white zone -- it consistently votes with the liberals.

Never mind Sacramento. That’s just where the beautiful State Capitol building is located (Thomas Kinkaide thought enough of it to paint a gorgeous picture of it). San Francisco runs this state, with help from some parts of Los Angeles.

I’m in the right part of the state and would love this proposal. Can we refuse to send Old Calfornia any water or food?

How did West Virginia split from Virginia?

Besides that, California is NOT a state. It’s a Republic. So is Texas, for that matter.

Hey Dan, what do you think of splitting our state in two?

I have mixed feelings. I’d prefer to get fair redistricting. That would solve a whole wealth of problems. I love our state. I haven’t given up yet on fixing it.

Thanks Dan. I would hate to lose the SF Bay. But I would love to offload the residents into their own state where they could pay for their own craziness instead of using our taxes and our children for their socialist wet dreams.

If you succeed, I'll move back! In the meantime, I know dozens of people in BOTH proposed states who will go for your program.

Also, we would love a split in Oregon, east and west. A good idea also is to take eastern Oregon and Washington for one state and Western parts for another.

If Texas was readmitted to the Union along with the other Southern states following the organization of postwar civil government, the treaty that brought Texas into the Union would be abrogated. However, if Texas or the other Southern states did not have the right to secede, which was Lincoln’s contention, then the treaty remains in force and Texas could be split up without Congressional approval. This would be an interesting issue for the Supreme Court.

People in Santa Barbara County vote conservative when the issue is their money, and keeping their money. Monterey County less so, but I'll try to give a go at explaining my initial assessment. Much of this proposal has to do with people keeping more of their hard earned money.

The proposal was originally written after the recall election. Santa Barbara County easily hit the conservative note on recalling Grey Davis when the main issue was one of personal finance and motor vehicle fees. Monterey County was not as enthusiastic for the recall effort in the more heavily populated northern parts of the county, but was very supportive in the southern rural parts that comprise most of the county. I was told that a final well prepared proposal can bring the rural parts of Monterey County into the new larger state.

There are national statistics published showing which states contribute and receive money at the federal level.

For example, most of the south (red states) get more than they send to the feds.

I have no idea how this would work out, for the counties in California. I expect some large counties like San Bernardino receive more than they send to Sacremento.

In any event, I don’t expect a proposal like this will get far, at all.

I live in Orange County (red) where I can drive a few miles one way into a city very full of illegal immigrants, and a few miles down the coast to Newport and Laguna Beach, with very high incomes.

An update on the proposal to split California into two states:

1) I have to make the proposal current to the political climate in California today. The proposal was originally written before the 2006 elections.

2) With all the new environmental, anti-family, bigger government, and added regulation state laws recently passed by the legislature and signed by the girlie-man, splitting the state becomes a much more viable possibility.
