I love these attempts at splitting California, it’s been going on for over a hundred years. I wouldn’t mind if it happened.
The problem is that the concentration of population is in the LA area, and they control resources such as water, which is mostly in northern Cal. The SoCali’s like it just the way it is, and will not vote for a split.
I don’t think the original poster, is talking about a north/south split.
What’s the point of that?
You’ll have two liberal-majority states, which are still controlled by one party.
Split California directly into blue state Cal, and red state Cal.
There will need to be serious discussions about how that is done — for example you can’t just have two blue blotches surrounded by red (although that represents California) — probably you’ll need to keep a corridor open between the two major metropolitan areas, or it just won’t be feasible.
It may mean giving up the central coastline, but frankly all that area is pretty liberal too. Santa Barbara. Ventura. San Luis Obispo.
I really, really like this idea.
Alternate approach:
(only half tongue in cheek)
Have the entire rural east half of the state, simply merge with Nevada...
New Nevada would become a big Republican state, balancing out the electoral votes of the now-smaller leftist California.
Win. Win.

The last effort to divide Washington State was lead by Sen. Bob Morton (R) in 2005. It's been tried numerous times, always fails. The socialists on the west side don't want to lose their power or your tax revenue.
From the Seattle PI, Feb 2005:
The Republican from Orient [Sen. Bob Morton] is the prime sponsor on a joint memorial in the Senate that asks President Bush to create a new state east of the Cascades that would comprise 20 of the current state's 39 counties. Nine other Republican senators have signed on in support. Similar measures have been introduced in past years without success.
The rest of the article is worth the read.
Mexafornia is a result of a state ruled by girlymen and women with snap on tools.
Thanks for the link. I’m quite familiar with Sen. Morton, and past attempts at seceding from the coast. I hate and despise democrats, and am tired of being ruled by those arrogant swine. I would love to be able to secede. Don’t think that it’ll ever happen, though.
Here are my 2 main concerns:
1) Those liberals, not resident in the new state, will flea to the new state and the problem will simply be recreated in the new state.
2) As the skilled, moneyed and motivated liberals flea the two, old, liberal enclaves , those counties will be consumed by Mexicans. As the Mexican demographic soars in these counties, the US face the prospect of at least one and possibly two enclaves in it's midst, whose principal residents are foreign nationals with no education, skills, capital or a desire to maintain a political connection with the US. Those foreign nationals will control two major US ports.
I love almost every idea I’ve heard that splits up California. But in order to get it so that the majority in the state would vote for its passage, you need to come up with something that the millions of socal folks will go for. They are the majority, they won’t vote for something that makes them give up more than they gain.
People have been talking about dividing the state of California even when it was part of Mexico! The state is really two states—Northies are pretentious and snobs, Southies are layed back (No southern Californian cares if you call Los Angeles LA—but try to call sin city by the bay Frisco and see what happens). In the south we call the northern Californians “Soggyheads” (Because the rain has softened their brains). Divide the state into North and South California. Divide it at Santa Maria. South California’s Capital could be Santa Barbara—Their court- house even looks like a state capital! Our state motto could be Kowabunga! The state rodent Micky Mouse. Maybe we should unilaterally declare South California the 51st State and appoint Mel Gibson as governor until elections could be held. The best day to do this action: April 1st. April Fools Day.
“The proposed initiative for the change on how our electoral delegates are selected is dead in the water from what I read a couple weeks back. The Republican proponents that created the proposal have abandoned it last I heard.”
That is a real shame, I was hoping you all could pull it off. Republicans chickened out again, what a surprise!
You are quite right. I had given that a passing thought at one point, but the thought passed quickly and with no action on my part. You have done great with a list and it is an important aspect worth consideration and action.
PS: The suggestion should get around the contiguous area arguement by providing for free passage by sea between SF and LA/LB, the same by non shaded vessles through shaded coastal waters, and by noting that the libs get the best commercial harbors on the Pacific coast.
PPS: For the benefit of folks living in rational sections of the US, a half mil in LA county is a starter house.
Then build a fence around it.
Northern California has always thought of themselves ha more civilized, better educated and just plain more worthy than Southern California.
I often was in SF when the Lakers and the Celtics would be in the play offs. Lakers fans were the enemies to them.
I live in what used to be the most conservative Calif. county (Placer County). Unfortunately, we were invaded by people from the Bay Area cashing in on their homes. I see more liberal bumper stickers than ever before. One day I was driving on the freeway when I saw an American flag on the bumper of a Toyota Prius about a 100 feet ahead. The Prius normally have a lot of liberal bumper stickers (second only to the Suburu Forester). I thought “Wow! Finally a patriotic bumper sticker on a Prius”. Unfortunately, as I got closer I read “these colors don’t rule the world”.
But it’s perfectly clear to anyone that the denizens of Northern California around SF Bay are not civilized at all. So where did they get the idea they were superior to anyone else?
The proposal is very much a starting point, and I expect it will be revised with the help of people more qualified than me to assess the pros and cons.
I had included the four Central California coastal counties, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura for specific reasons.
Rural Monterey and Santa Barbara counties are quite conservative, although their urban centers are liberal. San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties conservative. Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties are where our offshore oil is located. And I’ve a sense that if the new state is formed, a well known state senator from Ventura County will be the first governor of the new state.
Yes, seeing how the problem with illegal immigrants plays out would be one of the most interesting aspects to watch. I am quite certain the larger state would not be sympathetic to illegal immigrants and the result would send the illegal immigrant population into the two small heavily populated areas forming the smaller state. The smaller state would have a ratio of 2 illegal immigrants for every 3 legal residents. No telling how long the citizens in those areas would be willing to provides free healthcare, housing, and food, but I don’t imagine they would do it for too long.
I truly believe the smaller state will find itself taking some more conservative approaches to problems under this proposal. I see that as one of the benefits. It will shake those areas back to living in the real world.
I’ll ask about making a ping list for this to get you and others interested on the list and keep all informed of developments.
I’m really counting on FreeRepublic and California FReepers to get this known and win.
