After First Debate, Thompson's Absence Noticed on Campaign Trail

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Mitt Romney was in Michigan, Colorado, Arizona and Nevada and then went back to Michigan. Rudy Giuliani visited Florida, Michigan, South Carolina, Alabama, Washington and New Hampshire. John McCain went from Michigan to Iowa to New Hampshire.

But where was Fred, as in Fred Thompson?

Besides participating in his first presidential debate in Michigan last Tuesday, Thompson was missing from the campaign trail. The former Tennessee senator and star of NBC's "Law & Order" was scheduled to be in New Hampshire this weekend, but canceled.

New Hampshire voters noticed.

"He's a late entry. That will probably hurt him," said Geri Gormley, of Bow, who visited with McCain but remains uncommitted. "We're grass roots. Candidates come up and pick our brains, one on one.

After waiting so long for him to finish “testing the waters” and enter the race, I expected more from his campaign than I’ve seen thus far.

I suppose he knows what he’s doing, but after all the hype about his run for the White House, I had thought he’d be leading Rudy by now.

I’d much rather have Hunter win, but I most definitely do not want RINO Rudy to win.

Did you honestly expect that this is how his campaign would take shape?

“Appearance” was fair when Kerry married his money, and it still is now.

This is an AP article, (nothing to do with Fox), I have read it everywhere today.

Geez, at least make a sock puppet identity to reply to yourself....show a little initiative. Your Kung-fu is weak.

It’s a marathon and he is top tier.

He has top pros working for him. It boils down to funds, where they are found, then how to spend them to carry out a strategy and implement a plan.

He announced a month ago and last we heard he took in more than $12 million.

I expect he is shaking his cold/flu and looking to improve his appearance. There is still time to get momentum.

If in a month from now his team has not gapped up or steadily climbed then there will be concern. But latest reports are that he is doing very well in SC, VA and better in IA. NH may be written off, they have become more liberal with influx from MA.

Thompson is playing not to lose and he’s in prevent defense as we speak.

Unfortunately, the only thing the "prevent" defense really prevents is victory (I forget who said it). Though I will admit I'm curious as to what Fred's goal is.

It may well be (I'm guessing here) that Fred would rather have Romney be President than himself, but that he'd rather be President than have Giuliani or Hillary take the role. If something like that is the case, that would suggest that he may want to avoid doing anything that would hurt Romney's chances more than it would help his own.

If that's the case (and again, I'm only guessing) that would cause me to favor Fred Thompson; unfortunately, it would also make it less likely that he'd win.

Sorry to offend anyone but I am totally unimpressed with this man. He looks and acts tired and jaded. Maybe he was built up too much and expectations were too high but whatever it is I can’t picture him as POTUS

Well, I’m not necessarility down on New Hampshire, but I do think it has been rather rediculous the power they have played in the selection process. I will say they haven’t exactly provided a good service for our side in the past, with some of the choices we’ve been presented with later on, with the process working like it has.

Lets hope this works out better, but I’m not holding my breath.

Hey Saundra...been enjoying a beautiful day of Missouri sunshine...I'm of the opinion that he THINKS he has their vote locked up, because where else are Evangelicals going to go? Rudy? Romney the Mormon? Look how he handled the Dobson incident. He pretty well blew off Mr. Dobson with no fear...

He's the Conservative in this race and I believe he expects to get full support...
