Given Thompson's performance in campaign events, I think this is a good strategy for him. If other candidates destroy themselves, he can emerge from the cave he has been hiding.

Why would Thompson hide a cave?

Hmmm. I presumed Fred would be an 'energizer bunny' once he officially entered the race.

I think the last thing Fred needs is to be perceived as 'lazy' or 'half hearted'.

Fred Thompson '08!

From Politico,

“It would seem so on the surface, but a Fred aide cautions that just because there are no public events doesn’t mean the candidate isn’t working hard.

Per this aide, Thompson was raising campaign cash in Texas on Wednesday and in Tennessee yesterday. He’s also holding a bevy of private meetings. And next weekend, he’ll be back on the campaign trail, doing retail in a key state.”

Thompson is playing not to lose and he’s in prevent defense as we speak. He assumes he has the Evangelical vote locked up and hopes to pick up some stragglers along the way based on his name id and the “anyone but Giuliani” voters. It’s a good strategy for him...minimizes his chances of making a mistake and people can continue to see in him what they desire...

Skipping campaign events and insulting early primary state votes is always a great strategy. Way to go!

Anyway, I would vote for Fred in a general elections, but given his attack against free speech (McCain-Kennedy) and his “aspirations of citizenship for illegals” crap (Fox News interview, 2007), I cannot support him in primaries. This kind of actions would be flip-flopping for any other candidate. I say it is flip-flopping.

I think if anything the polling data shows that the race is still variable. It will be interesting to see if McCain can have a resurgence. I know we went to a Cantor sponsored Republican Roundup here in VA on Saturday and Thompson’s booth which was shared with Rudy and McCain had nothing left midway through the event. Everything was gone, signs, stickers and people were still flocking to it to sign the register. Rudy did the worst of the bunch. I suppose maybe they just brought more stuff but it didn’t look that way. Thompson is going to do well in VA.

No matter what Fred does he is going to be slammed by the media. Fred was busy this week raising money and having meetings but of course that is completely ignored in this article.

I see also the usual FR suspects bad mouthing Fred without any proof at all. I love the ones that sound like dems using the "But" qualifier in their statements, as in "I would vote for Fred in the primary "BUT"...and then go on to say whatever slam is current against Fred. If it is their candidate,(Rudy, McRomney, et al) then the MSM is always wrong, if it is Fred, why whatever the MSM says against Fred has to be true.

Bunch of Rinos on this forum using Rino tactics trying to get Rinos elected.

“But where was Fred, as in Fred Thompson?”

All of the others are running for the Presidency, Fred’s decided just to mosey.

LOL! I knew someone would post that his failure to be very active is really a brilliant campaign strategy on his part.

"We're grass roots. Candidates come up and pick our brains, one on one.

Look New Hampshire, I doubt you understand this, but most of us couldn't give a fig whether you vet the candidates for us or not.

Your comments seem to be in desparate need of translation. "We're here to check Thompson out, and if he isn't going to come up here and make me look like a Washington, D.C. power hitter, I won't vote for him."

Okay, so don't. Yawn.

What'ya got, three electoral votes up there?

FoxNews and Rupert are in the tank for Rudy.

This type of underhanded behavior just keeps lowering my opinion of FoxNews.

All Rudy all the Time.

Makes me sick!

Ah, yes.

“Here in New Hampshire, we expect politicians to suck our $%^&#. If they don’t, then we won’t vote for them. It isn’t the ideas, or the positions...unless the position is bent over in front of us.”

A lot of folks in the press feel the same way.

“This Michigan debate, watched by 53 voters during the afternoon when most folks are working, will be make or break for Thompson!”

For this AZ voter - I don’t trust Mitt or Rudy. Don’t care what they say - their position will change like Dole’s did as soon as the nomination is wrapped up. If either of them gets it, they’ll talk a lot different the following day!

McCain has too many loose screws.

Huckabee - OK on some stuff, but there are rumors that he is another compassionate conservative. No thanks, if that is true.

That pretty much leaves Fred. He’d have to be awful to be worse than his competitors!

Heh, heh. I thought you were serious until you got to the “cave” part. The thing about Fredheads is that no matter what Thompson does, they say it was the smart thing to do.

Like I’ve said before, he IS playing it smart—if he’s running for VP.

It doesn’t seem that Fred Thompson has the stamina or desire to put in the 24/7 campaigning that is necessary in the Primaries.

Certainly necessary to campaign against Her Heinous.

Sad, but this article seems to indicate a weak candidate. That would be terrible in November ‘08.
