Turk Warns Against House 'Genocide' Motion
By SEBNEM ARSU Published: October 15, 2007 ISTANBUL, Oct. 14 The chief of the Turkish armed forces has warned that military relations with the United States would take a negative turn if Congress approved the Armenian genocide resolution that was passed by the House Foreign Affairs Committee last week.
Gen. Yasar Buyukanit, the armed forces chief, was quoted by the newspaper Milliyet on Sunday as saying that the resolution, which condemns the killings of 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks beginning in 1915 as an act of genocide, has caused considerable disappointment in Turkey. He called the passage of the resolution by the committee sad and sorrowful, in light of the strong links the two NATO allies have shared.
Further, if it were to be passed by the full House of Representatives, our military relations with the U.S. would never be as they were in the past, he said. We could not explain this to our public, he said. The U.S., in that respect, has shot itself in the foot.

With respect, the War on Terror is a War of Ideas. If we airbrush over the killing of 1.5 Million people by these Islamic fanatics we not only make ourselves accessories to their crime, we are shooting ourselves in the foot.
If the War is successfully framed as Evil America abu-ghraibing its way through innocent Muslim countries, then we have lost.
If the War is correctly framed as a war against the most fanatical proponents of the ideology that has through 14 centuries of history led to the murder and rape of millions in the name of its blood-soaked Prophet, then we will win.
It is those who whitewash Islamic democide who are - I think unwittingly - undermining all that our troops have fought and died for.
Don't let us become a Nation of Hitlers, saying "Who remembers the Armenians?" We must rub the Turk's collective noses in their democide. This war of ideas will never end if we allow Turks - and by extension other Muslims - to stay in their Ataturkic echo chamber.
In passing, a lot of FReepers seem to think that as the Armenian democide is in the history books, then that's ok. I submit that they try finding it in a Turkish history book.
But it’s the Democrat timing, dear one, THE TIMING of this resolution - sit back at think for a moment.
Shoudn’t we be condemning what those Vandal SOBs did to Rome?
“In many ways it parallels the situation with Musharraf in Pakistan. He’s a bastard, but he’s our bastard, and the alternative is worse.”
BBBUMP!
This was done now not out of any concern for the genocide OR the Armenians but was USED as an excuse for undermining the WOT and our troops.
To USE such a tragedy of other people to gain a personal -= and traitorous - goal, is Evil personified.
The democrats have shown that genocide only concerns them when it's convenient. Else why did they deliberately turn a deaf ear to the cries for help while the majority of the Rwandan people - 800,000 men, women and children - were being hacked, shot and burned to death? Clinton stood in front of the mike and proclaimed "There is NO genocide happening in Rwanda!" He sent HalfBright to the UN to repeat the mantra.
For the democrats to pull this stunt NOW is a dastardly deed on two fronts. It's a treasonous attempt to undermine our troops in a time of war, and put our troops in jeopardy, using someone else's tragedy to accomplish it.
I'm just as disheartened at responses like yours that fail to = deliberately or not - recognize this. I would think those who sympathize with the 90 year old genocide, would take umbrage at it being used in this contemptible way.
Not only are the posters who support this double-edged seditious act, but in the defense posts, as the traitorous democrats do, you 'supporters' have consistently failed to address the REAL TIME genocide Clinton and crew brushed aside.
Such support is either clueless, disingenuous or blatantly in bed with the treasonous and evil perpetrators of this transparent, in-your-face act to disrupt the success that our troops have fought and died for...
To defend this act as anything other than a political power play on the backs of both the Armenians and our troops is to lie in bed with the dogs - we are not fooled.
BUMP BTTT
The above I understand to be true, and I have tried to make those points on other forums. Where is some web or hardcopy documention of the above which I can use in arguments against those who don't know or refuse to know what Muslims did to the Serbs?
Sadly, many on FR don’t pay attention to the realities of the world, or even seem to have an understanding of modern history and all the intricacies of current events.
Even though they can just google for more info they are just drive-by posters.
That is sad because to say the least, that area of the world is complicated. Wheels in wheels and all that.
They killed 1.5 million Christians. I’ll stand with my dead brothers. You stand with the Turks.
Lets Kill 1.5 million Turks...and call it even.
The vote was 27-21, which according to someone on another thread is precisely the # of Dems and Pubs on the Foreign Affairs committee. Kind of interesting, isn't it? On the other hand, 3 Dems and 3 Pubs sponsored the resolution so it's hard to imagine that no Republicans would have voted for it.
But why we don't know for sure who voted how? Is it typical that committee votes aren't made public? Seems odd.
And most Armenian-Americans - who very much want this recognition passed - are Republicans.
I would almost swear I saw an article earlier today that said it was primarily Democrats who have been lobbied to get the resolution passed. So Armenians may be Republicans, but they seem to be working through the Democrats here (if I'm remembering the article right).
I stand with my grandson, Airborne TF in Afghanistan who desperately needs the anti-IED equipment that comes in ONLY through Turkey.
If you aren't incensed that the Pelosi gang is using your "dead brothers" for their own seditious purpose, you may be a victim of naivete...
if you believe the Pelosi gang cares a rats rump about your "dead brothers" , you are woefully misinformed.
They do this NOW for one reason only. It is despicable beyond reason that they would use a century old tragedy of one people to jeopardize our troops today.
Exactly, the timing screams 'bad politics'.
