Britain's chief Rabbi: Multiculturalism Threatens Democracy

'Multiculturalism threatens democracy'

Associated Press , THE JERUSALEM POST Oct. 20, 2007

Multiculturalism promotes segregation, stifles free speech and threatens liberal democracy, Britain's top Jewish official warned in extracts from his book published Saturday.

Jonathan Sacks, Britain's chief rabbi, defined multiculturalism as an attempt to affirm Britain's diverse communities and make ethnic and religious minorities more appreciated and respected. But in his book, "The Home We Build Together: Recreating Society," he said the movement had run its course.

"Multiculturalism has led not to integration but to segregation," Sacks wrote in his book, an extract of which was published in the Times of London.

"Liberal democracy is in danger," Sacks said, adding later: "The politics of freedom risks descending into the politics of fear."

Sacks said Britain's politics had been poisoned by the rise of identity politics, as minorities and aggrieved groups jockeyed first for rights, then for special treatment.

The process, he said, began with Jews, before being taken up by blacks, women and gays. He said the effect had been "inexorably divisive."

"A culture of victimhood sets group against group, each claiming that its pain, injury, oppression, humiliation is greater than that of others," he said.

In an interview with the Times, Sacks said he wanted his book to be "politically incorrect in the highest order." But Sacks defended his strong support for Jewish schools in Britain, saying the promotion of Jewish education was compatible with integration.

Photogenic and outspoken, Sacks is highly regarded in Britain and makes frequent appearances on television, radio and in the national press.

His reputation among Britain's 260,000-strong Jewish community is more varied. Ultra-orthodox believers were dismayed by the suggestion in Sacks' earlier book, "The Dignity of Difference," that the faith did not contain the absolute truth, according to The Times.

In 1997, he outraged many among his more liberal-minded constituents when he criticized the late leader of the Reform movement as a "destroyer of the faith" in a letter leaked to the media.

Sacks also raised hackles when, in 2002, he said in an interview that there were many things that happened in Israel that made him "very uncomfortable as a Jew."

One hopes that when the alpha clergy speaks out it will filter down and gain traction among local religious clergy who may then feel more comfortable expressing this from their pulpits. Equally heartening was the Pope's statement that we are experiencing "the dictatorship of relativism".

He’s right, except that I don’t think the process “began with Jews.”

Europe did it in imitation of the US, and we began with blacks, who were somehow were considered by the left to be incapable of simply being treated as just Americans, plain and simple. This was the case even though blacks were native born and as American as any other American. And then of course the demands for special treatment popped up on every side.

Multiculturalism will kill any democracy. Look at our big cities like Detroit, Los Angeles, San Francisco, etc.

Multiculturalism in the workplace means one thing. Do NOT hire the most qualified person for a job, but rather hire and promote people because of their race or religion.

Isn’t that exactly what Dr. King argued against?.

Western Europe and their need for cheap labor needed a plan to bring in and assimilate the peoples of their former colonies while contemporaneously ridding their own populace of ethnocentricism which their elites viewed as an impediment. Unfortunately the effects on the host culture, it’s history, shared values and religious faith which bind a nation became dispensible for the higher good of greed (cheap labor) and cultural deconstruction of it’s people.

I remember years ago when the word ‘diverse’ first came to light and was being pushed by the US government. At the time I thought how close that word was to the word ‘divide’, and that has come to pass through multiculturalism. In my youth I was taught that it was better to place importance on how much we as human beings have in common rather than the stressing the differences.

I recall back in 9th grade geography class the introduction of “ethnocentricism” into the curiculuum. This was the early ‘70s and the beginning of multicuralism indoctrination.

I'm fairly well convinced that we should commission some reputable studies on the likely benefits and effectiveness of...

1.) 'Criminal Exile'/Removal to whatever other continent is most appropriate in a given case. and

2.) ‘Repatriation Incentives’ for cases of non-criminal dysfunction to whatever other continent is most appropriate in a given case.

And a binding referendum question about this on the ballot come next election might be a good idea.

“Multiculturalism will kill any democracy.”

I’m of the opinion that a country can only take limited amounts of cultural disparity. At some point, those cultures’ core values will collide and there is no compromising core values in most. Opposing groups vie for government attention, money and control. Conservatism and Liberalism are redefined to reflect cultural positions rather than views on the role of government. Everyone begins looking to the “neutral party”, the government, to mediate every little cultural dispute, real OR imagined.

First it leads to political upheaval, self-segregation, political turmoil and then violence. I believe we are entering the “self segregation” phase or at least about to.

...and the latest cavein of the foundations of society is the group known as “children”! They make even better ‘victims’ than the blacks! Who knows, they may even ‘vote’ someday. Pretty sure liberals have it all over Islam in lying as a ‘means to an end’!

I believe we are entering the “self segregation” phase or at least about to.

It's been well underway here in California for decades. One tiny example from just a few days ago.

“It’s been well underway here in California for decades.”

As usual, California leads the trend. I see it beginning to happen in other places as well.

Did he mention the efforts to placate muslims by granting them special rights with reference to Sharia Law?
