This is actually the transcript of the interview Hugh had with Dr. Mohler on his show. Very interesting comments.

I am an extremely conservative So. Baptist. Bob Jones is an extremist. I can’t figure out what is going on with them. They condemned Billy Graham because he is a Baptist and his wife was Presbyterian.

I would say that perhaps you shouldn’t overestimate the importance of Bob Jones III endorsement of Mitt Romney.
Protestants are very very dogmatic, Mr. Jones can say what he will, it doesn’t neccessarily mean votes at the polls in large numbers.
When Mitt gives a speech at Bob Jones this Jan or Dec, that will be the “true” test, GWB gave one and he caught flack for it, but he also won SC.
McCain insulted Bob Jones U, and he lost in SC.

I wonder if there’s even a candidate worth supporting. My wife and I are going to vote Republican because we would NEVER consider voting for the homosexual/abortion/illegal immigrant/higher tax crowd. But, frankly, it’s getting hard to tell the two parties apart. We’ll just hold our nose when we cast our ballet. The day may come when it simply isn’t worth bothering to go to the poll.

what this really does politically is that it puts Bob Jones in the position of making it a lot easier for people in other Evangelical circles to make similar moves. No -- what this really does is make it easier for many of those in the Christian community to scratch Dr Mohler and Bob Jones III off their list of credible leaders.

Don’t give up - and never stay away from the polls.
Just remember — a “non” vote is a vote “for” the Liberal Democrats - probably Hillary.

According to some Mitt supporters you are spouting propaganda for Planned Parenthood and you shouldn't do that on FR.
Yes you read that correctly.

Actually, Protestants haven't been very dogmatic in the last century. But independent fundamentalists (and Baptists and some evangelicals) continue to uphold doctrinal purity and enter the public arena with the same values they have in their churches. It is a very tempered kind of religious influence though, not some kind of American Taliban movement that the media likes to portray when a presidential candidate visits the Bob Jones university complex.
When Mitt gives a speech at Bob Jones this Jan or Dec, that will be the true test, GWB gave one and he caught flack for it, but he also won SC. McCain insulted Bob Jones U, and he lost in SC.
A very astute political observation. Mitt must comMitt. That means, at a minimum, not being afraid to be seen with us and campaign for these votes in particular. The other most controversial campaign stop is at VMI (
Virginia Military Institute). I wouldn't be surprised to see Romney at VMI before the primaries as well as at BJU.

That’s an ironic photo to post for a Mitt ping list, given that he denounced Reagan and has even bragged about being an Independent during “Reagan-Bush.”
The more I learn about him, the less I like him. He had been my second choice of the top tier, but I can’t really say that anymore.

Maybe Jones knows a lot more than you do about conservative politics. Just a thought.
Notice Mohler's mention of the timing and how the race might shape up. My reading is that Mohler was indicating that Fred might pick up his numbers and fundraising considerably, making him the better pick for the Religious Right since he doesn't have some of Mitt's baggage (MA AWB, some past statements that aren't so pleasing to Christians, etc.).
Mohler was indicating that it was a little early for Jones and others to commit to Mitt, that it might have been wiser to wait a month to see how Fred's numbers, campaign and fundraising is doing. Of course, that's the Baptist spin on this (same opinion I've had as a Baptist). But the indie fundies and conservative evangelicals seem ready to place their bets now. It seems a little early to me but they may simply recognize that if they're to place any sort of decisive support behind a candidate, they need to play kingmaker now and that Romney's Mormonism may take some extra effort to sell to their circle of influence.

Maybe Jones knows a lot more than you do about conservative politics ..maybe he doesn't--there is a lot more than politics at stake here
Jones, and whoever else comes out in future days apparently aren't able to use YouTube--they need to do their homework on this man
And I don't require any Baptist explanation on anything, thanks...

I’ll call. What did Dr. Mohler say that you don’t find credible? Or are you just sharing your ignorance with us?

Did Romney accept Dr. Bob’s endorsement? I believe that
George W. Romney would not have accepted such an endorsement from the grandfather Jones in 1967. I’m just not much on a Romney or any other MI politicians of the past half century, including one in the White House from 1974-77.
