Thanks for that! I had a roommate in college who used to do this sort of thing to telemarketers. This brought back some mighty fine memories....

Whenever I get called by a telemarketer I say, “Hold on a second.” Then I just lay the phone down on the table and forget about it.

I had a roommate in college who was great at this. One of the things he used to do was keep one of those freon horns close by the phone. Anytime he'd answer a telemarketer he'd get 'em talking, then let out a blast with the air horn right into the phone. Then, he'd say, "what the hell was that?" After a few seconds the telemarketer would go back into their blather and he'd give it another blast with the horn. Usually, it took 4-5 blasts before they got the message.

I really hate telemarketers. My home phone is unlisted and is never given out to anyone but family. I use my cell for any contacts that I might need. I'm on the national and state "do not call" lists, we've registered with the National Association of Telemarketers (or whatever they are called) on their do not call list, and with all that we still get a half dozen telemarketer calls every week. I pay for the phone access to my home and that makes it my property. I view telemarketing nonsense as trespassing and an invasion of privacy, not to mention a waste of time because, simply by virtue of you making an unsolicited call to me, you have removed any chance of me ever doing business with you. That's been my policy for over 20 years. You'd think they'd get the message, huh?

I am a telemarketer, if you dont want to talk to us just hang up on us...we like it that way.

I haven't been successful at getting through to anyone who can do anything about this. So, since you are here on the forum, would you please stop calling? Thank you!

So am I. I see more and more calls from boiler rooms in Ontario. Also, "Charities" are exempt from the lists. If you ever give to one, the number hits the suckers lists.

The worst offenders are the so-called "Police and Fire" charities, where the locals might get a penny out of the Dollar. The local Police run warnings in the papers about them.

We have record low unemployment. There is no reason for anyone to be a telemarketer, and limited sympathy for them. Intruding into people's quality time will get you part of what you ask for. This includes suppertimes.

“Of course the poor telemarketer is just trying to earn a buck too.”

Exactly. It is not the fault of these poor guys and gals on the other end of the telephone. They are just people in a position where they don’t have much choice but take a job that is available.

I try to be gentle with them. I’ve been in situations where I had to take the job that was there.

“Hold on a second.” Then I just lay the phone down on the table and forget about it.

At the office, we used to double team 'em...a call would come in, John would answer and the telemarketer for office supplies would ask for the serial number on the copier; John would ask them to hold on while he got it.

I'd give it a full minute and then pick up asking if they'd been helped, and they'd say John was helping them.

I'd tell them John was at the library, and they'd be stunned, saying they thought he was getting the serial number.

At that point I'd break it to the caller that we used the library's equipment.

My son did telemarketing for several years, and he knows that. Yet, when a telemarketer calls him, he tries to keep them on the line as long as possible... taking their time from them. I tell him to just hang up when he does it around me, but he thinks he's being a clown.

When our daughter was little she loved to talk on the phone. We would just hand the phone to her when a telemarketer called.
