(TULSA, Okla.) November 7 – Priests are pledging to go to jail if that's what it takes to protect illegal immigrants from the immigration crackdown.
Last Thursday House Bill 1804 went into effect, requiring legal documentation for any immigrant to live or work in the state.
About half of the Eastern Oklahoma Catholic Diocese is Hispanic, that's about 60,000 Catholic parishioners.
Bishop James Slattery tells FOX23 News it doesn't matter how many are legal or illegal, he doesn't know because the church doesn't ask. He says the Catholic Church will help protect all of them from the new law.

They could wash windows, scrub toilets, wash clothes ... I mean ... there's a ton of jobs at the Vatican that others won't do ... or would like to get out of.
The Church is under no obligation to check the citizenship of people who attend Mass. But it would be wrong to hire any of them. And it would be wrong to help them disobey or evade the law.
I understand their sympathy. But this is just wrong.

Along with following one's conscience, though, comes the accepting of any societal consequences, which these religious have spoken to.
There is still that commandment from the Heavenly Father to Moses that still stands.... Thou shalt not steal. Taking taxpayer dollars to fund illegal activity is NOT of God.
Most American Catholics are pissed at their church because of the child molestation. Add aiding and abetting illegal immigrants, and they will become Protestants.
And some here make the mistake of believing the American taxpayer should support the entire third world

This makes me so mad. Aiding and abetting illegal immigrants who are taking over our country. These Catholics are essentially doing the same thing Fruity-Rudy did in setting up a sanctuary city in New York. They should be arrested and jailed for a very long time. And if it turns out they’re taking orders from Rome, I don’t even want to say what I’d suggest.
Lots of priests get it wrong. This is not a scandal, not to me. It's hard to get it right.
But, with all respect, they got it wrong. It doesn't weaken my faith in the Catholic Church. I never had too much faith in the clergy. They got it wrong? what a surprise,

Slattery is an orthodox, faithful Catholic bishop. I was suspicious of the excerpts and headline, so I read the whole article. It’s mostly about the Church refusing to use the sacraments or soup kitchens as ways to identify and arrest illegals. He does say that he hopes Church employees won’t be harrassed. He directly says that he understands the need to have secure borders and rule of law regarding immigration but that a single federal law would be better than this specific state law.
In short, the headline and the snippets posted here are misleading. I’d like to know what all Slattery said—I don’t particularly trust the sound-bytes in the article, but even the article puts a different spin on the misleading excerpts here.
Well... that's as about as good a Christian sentiment as you can find.
This is a gigantic example of a non-story.
If police, IMS, FBI, or whatever branch of the government were going to arrest Catholic priests for taking this position (which they are not) then I'm ready to line up and get arrested.
This story pisses me off, and so does the posting of this story.
Under no circumstances would I become a protestant just because of a few bad eggs or the weakness and sinfulness of the few. Truth is still truth regardless of some bad actors.

Well said. Some humanists just want to worship human law, as if a bunch of legislators are the highest arbiter of right and wrong.
