Report on recent election in Houston, TX

A quick report on the election of last Tuesday: I volunteered to be the Republican Alternate Judge in a Democrat majority precinct. Therefore, I spent a lot of time talking to Democrat volunteers and getting their view of the world. I found them to be surprisingly moderate. For example, they were all quite religious and involved in their churches. The neighborhood was overrun with drug dealers and criminals. All of the Democrats were EXTREMELY CONCERNED about crime and the laxity of the courts. One volunteer (elderly, African-American) quietly told me of her FIRM OPPOSITION to gay marriage. The African-Americans were quite concerned about how hard it is for black ex-cons to find jobs and implied that they understood that illegal immigration adversely affects poor American citizens the most. I took a poll and found that Hillary was the favorite of most. However, I could tell by body language when I mentioned Obama that the African-Americans would probably vote for him if the Hillary juggernaut falters. What does this mean? Proper framing of issues like gay marriage, crime, the hostility of the Democrat Party to religious belief/morality, and illegal immigration are potent themes for the Republican Party. Lastly, WHERE THE HELL WERE ALL OF THE REPUBLICAN VOLUNTEERS? Here we are in Houston, Texas and almost every precinct is still TOTALLY run by Democrat volunteers! We can't get enough Republicans to even put ONE SINGLE ELECTION JUDGE in a few precincts. We had better get a fire in our bellies or we will suffer under the rule of President Hillary!

Because we’re all too busy working and paying bills instead of sucking government tit.

Pretty much it. Except we can’t even get the retired people to do it.

Good post.

Proper framing of issues like gay marriage, crime, the hostility of the Democrat Party to religious belief/morality, and illegal immigration are potent themes for the Republican Party.

I couldn't agree with you more. A substantial majority of the people, including minorities, are still socially conservative. The great tragedy is that the administration won twice on that basis, but just couldn't seem to believe it.

The way to reach out to blacks and other minorities is to appeal to their better instincts, not to try to pass out more gravy than the Democrats, which is impossible.

The Republicans who run the campaigns have let the media define the debate, have been cowardly about speaking out openly on issues that would have great appeal, if only they weren't afraid of offending the liberal opinion shapers.

I vote in the suburbs of Houston. I would have to say that it's a pretty heavily Republican area.

The poll workers are uniformly about 75 years old, a quite possibly more in some cases. Real people with real jobs keeping their families going, and paying taxes for those who chose not to do the same, just don't have much time for this.

I own a small business. Taking the day off to work the election cost me $500. Hillary will cost ALL OF US a lot more! Just think of the taxes, regulations, exective orders, etc! BTW, most of the Democrat voluteers took a day of vacation from their jobs in order to contribute to their cause.
