THE Republican presidential candidates talk about illegal immigration as if they were in an arms race on toughness. The Democratic candidates have begun to tread more warily on the issue, as their debate last week in Las Vegas showed, but they still favor the language of accommodation over alarm.
Concern About Illegal Immigration Each approach, political strategists and officials warn, could have costs next November. Pollsters on both sides agree there is widespread anxiety, even anger, about the impact of illegal immigration. But an increasingly influential Hispanic electorate could be turned off by a hard line from the party they turned to in increasing numbers in the last two presidential elections.
Much will depend, strategists say, on how the candidates balance their statements.
A Republican who only talks border control or a Democrat who only talks about benefits and services for illegal immigrants are going to find themselves in a lot of trouble next fall, said Dan Schnur, a Republican strategist who worked on Senator John McCains presidential bid in 2000.
Looking at the Republicans at this point, it is often hard to find much difference among most of the leading contenders. They sound just as tough as the candidate who has been the angriest on immigration, Representative Tom Tancredo of Colorado, whose shoestring campaign recently began to run a television commercial in Iowa declaring that Islamic terrorists roam free in the United States because of an unsecured border.
The Republicans have railed against amnesty and sanctuary cities. They have promised to build a fence on the Mexican border to keep illegals out.
The ratcheting up of the language to win the Iowa caucuses may seem like the thing to do, but well pay a price, said John Weaver, a Republican strategist who worked for Mr. McCains presidential campaign...

thats probably about the poll results you would have got in California in 1950, nowadays the illegal alien situation in CA is beyond hopeless to control so the answer would prolly be "not at all, were almost all illegal aliens"
The candidate who promises to deport 90 percent of illegal aliens within six months of his inauguration will walk away with the election.
Are you kidding? They're all over the place... Like cockroaches.
Damn straight. Seventy-seven per-cent of the population are against illegal immigrants.
The Times finds its usual suspect "Republican" to support their assertion, and who does he turn out to be, one of McCain's people. What did they expect the guy to say? The only "tightrope" here is the noose around the neck of Democrat candidates who don't reject the party line.
Yep, this is not the 1st time I have see this spin being put out the last few days. Seems Clinton Inc, via their lapdogs in the Junk Media like Poddle Blitzer, are trying to put out the spin that the Republicans are the ones in trouble over immigration. That is exactly 180 degrees from the truth. I work with a number of pretty knee jerk Leftist blue collar Labor Union Democrats and they are seriously pissed about Illegals. Whether they are pissed enough to fight off a life time of political indoctrination and vote Republican, I doubt. But they may get pissed enough about Illegals to stay home in Nov 2008.
I agree, especially if lower middle class Dem voters ever figure out that illegal immigration is depressing their wages and hurting them as they try to get a foothold up the economic ladder. Illegals in this country hurt us all, but they most directly affect the prosperity of marginally-educated minority young people. If the lower classes ever figure out that the Dem party will gladly trade their economic opportunity for votes from illegals, watch out.
These numbers tend to confirm that the rat party in N.H. has been taken over by democrat scummers who, having completed their mission to destroy Taxachusetts are now trying their best to destroy a once rock ribbed conservative state like New Hampshire. They are leaving the mess of Boston and infecting N.H.
Then give a weak promise to be fair and balanced about making immigrants legal so as not to lose their big money lobbyists who want the illegals to man the fast food fryers...d:^D
Heres my standard post. We can do something about Illegal immigration.
RICO Citizen Recourse
Private persons and entities may initiate civil suits to obtain injunctions and treble damages against enterprises that conspire to or actually violate federal alien smuggling, harboring, or document fraud statutes, under the Racketeer-Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO). The pattern of racketeering activity is defined as commission of two or more of the listed crimes. A RICO enterprise can be any individual legal entity, or a group of individuals who are not a legal entity but are associated in fact, and can include nonprofit associations.
Heres what Ive been pushing: its time to file Racketeering, Influencing, and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) lawsuits. RICO lawyers could turn it around in a few years and MAKE MONEY at the same time. Im surprised they havent done it already.
In the absence of enforcement, we can get the word out in the meantime that there is money to be made in filing RICO lawsuits against employers who hire illegal aliens.
Employers would have no trouble shutting down the border if they could get sued by someone under the RICO statutes for hiring these people in the first place. The next time an illegal alien kills someone in a drunk driving accident or somesuch thing, Im going to point out that the victims family might be able to seek compensation from the employer under these statutes in the hopes that it would catch on. If this did catch on, would see such a swift backlash against illegal immigration that no employer would go near these people and theyll all simply want to go back home.
IRS Reporting
REWARD FOR REPORTING EMPLOYERS OF ILLEGAL ALIENS
CALL THE IRS HOTLINE 1-800-829-0433 YOU MAY BE ENTITLED TO A REWARD
Call the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) hotline 1-800-829-0433 to report all
suspected employers of illegal aliens-—you are not required to identify
yourself and may be entitled to a reward. The Application for Reward ( Form 211 http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f211.pdf)
can be downloaded from http://www.irs. gov or call 1-800-829-3676. The IRS does
not take kindly to employers that seek to evade taxes by paying cash for day
labor-this is a common practice at construction sites. Report the employer`s
license plate number and any other information you may have. Employers usually
can’t run and take the hit in their wallets. Follow up with the IRS and ask
what action is being taken; if they refuse to cooperate, notify the press and
your elected officials. Do your part-—spread the word-—help make this
nationwide campaign a success!!!

Hunters criticism of Thompson over this issue is well aimed. We need someone in the white house who isnt a johnny-come-lately on this issue.
