Dour Thompson Says I'm ``Just Fred'
The Guardian ^ | November 21, 2007 | Mike Glover

AMES, Iowa - Fred Thompson says his often-dour demeanor simply reflects his seriousness about the issues facing the country. ``I'm just Fred,'' he says, and the image that's served him through a successful political career won't be changing.

Thompson, who played a tough-minded and gruff district attorney on television's ``Law & Order,'' offers precisely that image as he campaigns for the GOP presidential nomination. He's generally serious and direct, with little of the backslapping and joking of many of his rivals.

``I laugh when I am amused and I'm amused a lot,'' said Thompson, in an interview with The Associated Press. ``When I'm talking about terrorism, when I'm talking about bankrupting the next generation, when I talk about what is going on in Washington, I am not amused. I don't think it's funny.''

He said he's ``no less chirpy'' on the campaign trail than when he won election and then re-election to the U.S. Senate in Tennessee. ``There's only one thing I can guarantee and that is I will be me, and it's served me pretty well politically,'' he said.

Like most of the candidates for the GOP nomination, Thompson is seeking to convince Republican primary voters that he is the natural heir to the political legacy of President Reagan, a former actor who was known both for his staunch conservatism and his sunny disposition.

Thompson has a take on Reagan's political success that plays into his own strengths.

``Reagan's success was that he was Reagan,'' said Thompson. ``When he did his television presentations, when he made his speeches, it was not all sunlight and music and a walk in the park. That was pretty serious stuff, he was talking about the Soviet Union.(continued)

Good enough for me, and the majority here on FR, if the polls are any indication. Now is the time to get the word out on the streets....

I like Fred, but God he is the worst candidate.

No energy whatsoever.

No chance.

I’m with you. I think the reports of Fred’s demise are premature. Let’s let Romney and Guiliani and “dimples” Huck tear each other up and see who emerges on the other side :)

GO FRED!!!

That's funny, I see it totally different from you.

To me he is more like the energizer bunny!

And with respect to him having no chance, pay attention to the polls, they say otherwise.

In fact, I doubt you like Fred at all and doubt your sincerity. All over the place AND right on the issues!

I like Fred, too. But I think his followers are a little fanatical and obsessive. LOL

Fred’s my man, and I believe our best candidate against Hilary. Very soothing and substantial who well counters her shrillness. He’s also put together a thoughtful, sincere and powerful platform. He can run a bit to the dour, but I think that’s gonna work this time around. I just hope the Pubbies don’t shoot themselves in the foot with the voting in the first handful of primaries. (E.g., people just don’t warm to or trust Mitt, even though he’s he’s been clever and has spent a lot of money to buy NH and IA.)

He could be like Romney, Rudy, McCain or Huckabee, and have no principles at all! RINOS every one.

Fred is just Fred with magnificant position papers. Show me the papers of any of the above. I’m waiting.

I like Fred.

Repeat.

However, I believe he really lacks on the stump. Ph by the way, this is not even a minority view among conservatives.

Did you hear him on Laura’s show 6 weeks ago, SoConPubbie?

Did you hear him on Laura’s show 6 weeks ago, SoConPubbie?

Listeners called in and were...well, embarrassed with his sleepy performance.

I want him to win, but he’s got to drop the ‘I’m Fred’ act and get some fire in his belly.

Oh...don’t doubt me. I don’t doubt whoever you are....

There is more to nominating a candidate than the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary.

Jeez, you’ve done it now...better get on your flame proof under wear.
Don’t you know that Ole Brer Fred is just waiting till the time is right to spring the trap. He’s really up 30 points in the polls, and the MSM fears him like a possum fears a pick handle. He’s only trending down to catch the other top tier guys asleep. Jack Bauer wears Fred PJs. I’m sure I left out a lot....but not to worry the usual chorus will be here soon and they’ll get ya up to speed. LOL
