Dour Thompson Says I'm ``Just Fred'
The Guardian ^ | November 21, 2007 | Mike Glover

AMES, Iowa - Fred Thompson says his often-dour demeanor simply reflects his seriousness about the issues facing the country. ``I'm just Fred,'' he says, and the image that's served him through a successful political career won't be changing.

Thompson, who played a tough-minded and gruff district attorney on television's ``Law & Order,'' offers precisely that image as he campaigns for the GOP presidential nomination. He's generally serious and direct, with little of the backslapping and joking of many of his rivals.

``I laugh when I am amused and I'm amused a lot,'' said Thompson, in an interview with The Associated Press. ``When I'm talking about terrorism, when I'm talking about bankrupting the next generation, when I talk about what is going on in Washington, I am not amused. I don't think it's funny.''

He said he's ``no less chirpy'' on the campaign trail than when he won election and then re-election to the U.S. Senate in Tennessee. ``There's only one thing I can guarantee and that is I will be me, and it's served me pretty well politically,'' he said.

Like most of the candidates for the GOP nomination, Thompson is seeking to convince Republican primary voters that he is the natural heir to the political legacy of President Reagan, a former actor who was known both for his staunch conservatism and his sunny disposition.

Thompson has a take on Reagan's political success that plays into his own strengths.

``Reagan's success was that he was Reagan,'' said Thompson. ``When he did his television presentations, when he made his speeches, it was not all sunlight and music and a walk in the park. That was pretty serious stuff, he was talking about the Soviet Union.(continued)

“The sad thing is that folks like you keep talking about how you “feel” about FDT with these trivial, petty little reasons that I would expect of someone who was completely politically unaware.”

So which part is trivial to you? The part where he’s trending down, or the part where he’s tied with 2 other candidates?
I don’t think the most loyal FreadHead can deny that FDT is trailing, has in fact been caught in Iowa by Huckabee.
As for being politically unaware, I’m not going to pretend in the face of evidence to the contrary that FDT or any one else is running better than they are.
Then you manage to compare me to the dems. I posted according to what was written in an article about FDT. You responded in general to the fact that my post didn’t “Hail Fred” I believe the MSM is crooked, but there are enough articles floating around about FDT that all say the same thing, that he’s under performing, and I don’t think that every single one is a hatchet job. Even conservative pundits are saying the same.

“Just how many are saying “Fred is Dead”???”

I haven’t done a head count. Brit Hume said earlier today that Freds campaign appeared stalled. There were several articles posted here at FR today, and I don’t believe at this point his polling numbers have not taken off as expected.

In terms of whether or not he would be a good president, both are trivial. You make my point precisely. This isn't a ball game. It's an election.

The answer is one (brit). In a snapshot, he’s polling third in Iowa and tied with money bags Romney in SC, and second to RinoRudy nationally. He’s doing ok and on a good track, but could be better. Hang in there.

Sorry, but your point is kind of squishy. This article is about FDT being “Just Fred” That’s what I’m posting to. If he can’t get elected being “Just Fred” it’s hardly trivial. You’re correct it’s not a ball game, but elections have to be won as well.

The only time I'm NOT dour is when I'm drunk, although I'm occasionally dour then too.

I don't even know what dour means.

“I like Fred, but God he is the worst candidate.

No energy whatsoever.

No chance.”

You guys are just so transparent, seminar callers on the radio. Why don’t you tell us who you are voting for, so we can ridicule your favorite baboon.

[This may come as a great shock to you, but “position papers” don’t win one the presidency. Energy, action, and executive experience win the presidency.]

Exactly what got Fidel, Stalin, and Hitler to power, that energy thingy.

He’s running ads. He’s making appearences, more than Mitt or Rudy in fact. He has PLANS for things that nobody else on EITHER side have.

What else do you want him to do?

This is how he is and who he is.
