There was one candidate who did not display any moderateness or liberalism or have any of his past forays into those areas displayed, and that candidate was Fred Thompson.......Thompson has as good a chance as any to win, and if he does, conservatives have an opportunity to have a platform that is fresh, new, and inspiring. Even if the man does not inspire you, the ideas are strong enough for inspiration among true conservatives who believe it is past time to reduce the size of the federal government. Thompson was right, all along, and Rush Limbaugh recognizes that. - Rush Limbaugh

This candidate, Senator Fred Thompson, has exhibited those qualities of conservatism since before his election to the U.S. Senate in 1994. He took those principles in 1994, turning a deficit of twenty points down in the polls to a twenty point margin of victoryan example of what conservatism can do.
A similar case for conservatism can be found in Sacramento in 1984, when a radio host introduced a local audience to conservative values, launching him to national prominence on his way to become THE conservative voice in America today. That man was Rush Limbaugh, brandishing a fiery conservative sword to excise liberalism as if he were a surgeon removing a parasite.

While a Thompson supporter myself, it is a shame to see the author trying to frame principles that he ascribes to Thompson as being in line with Kirk.
You can go read the “Essence of Conservatism” rather that this author’s use of the title at this link:
http://www.kirkcenter.org/kirk/essence-1957.html
I posted a FR thread on the actual Kirk article:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/943007/posts
Kirk opposed the first Gulf War asking were we waging “war for an oil can?” I know he would have supported hitting Afghanistan but I don’t know if he would have wanted to topple Saddam. He was not big on playing policeman.
