While a Thompson supporter myself, it is a shame to see the author trying to frame principles that he ascribes to Thompson as being in line with Kirk.

Kirk opposed the first Gulf War asking were we waging “war for an oil can?” I know he would have supported hitting Afghanistan but I don’t know if he would have wanted to topple Saddam. He was not big on playing policeman.
