Because the Boston Globe was looking into it. From the paper, posted a short time ago:
Mitt Romney, who has taken a tough stance against illegal immigrants in his quest for the Republican presidential nomination, has continued to employ a company that uses illegal immigrants to do lawn work at his home.
Responding to inquiries from the Globe, which had observed the work taking place at his house and interviewed the workers, Romney tonight fired the company for failing to comply with the law
Romney has made illegal immigration a central campaign issue in his bid for the nomination. At last week's Republican debate in St. Petersburg, Fla., Romney was quick to attack Rudy Giuliani for safeguarding illegal immigrants in New York City.
Yet early the morning after the debate, immigrants from Central America who say they are here illegally were in plain view on the lawn in front of Romneys salmon-colored mansion in Belmont. Chatting in Spanish, they hustled to rake massive clumps of leaves, dump them in barrels, and clear debris from his tennis court.
Their boss, Ricardo Saenz of Chelsea, was the same man who for a decade brought illegal immigrants and others to work for Romney, whom he had met through their shared Mormon faith. A year ago, the Globe broke the news that illegal immigrants landscaped Romneys 2.5-acre property.
In the past two months, the Globe observed Saenz and his crew at Romney's estate once a week, except during the week of Thanksgiving
Last Thursday, the Globe interviewed two of the three workers who were at Romney's house. Both said they were illegal immigrants from Guatemala; one of the immigrants said the third worker was also here illegally

“Leaf removal?”
Well I think the illegals are now engaged in something called “Mitt removal”, where they take a presidential campaign and trash it.
I’m not a big fan of Gov. Romney, but this thread makes me wonder if every FReeper has interviewed all the employees of any firm he has ever hired, or all the employees at any manufacturer of goods he’s purchased.
Or perhaps we have a bunch of sanctimonious grandstanding?
I have never met an illegal because they never admit it!
Because he is Mitt Romney?
Apparently the Boston Globe reporters would say otherwise. Perhaps they engaged in some waterboarding...
“Too lazy to mow is own lawn”
We don’t mow our lawn, we have a service because it is a hill and we are afraid with a regular mower we would fall over!
What is wrong with $8.00/hr. I get close to that and I am not illegal.
Who the heck is advising Mitt? Hillary?
I read a study once that examined the spending habits of the rich. It claimed that the rich are more cautious with discretionary spending than the poor are. I think the harder you work for the buck, and then the harder you try to save it from the government’s claws, the more cautious you may be.
A good definiton of rich is someone who has enough money that their money works for them, rather than they work for money.
“Rich people want to be rich as much as poor people. Poor people suckle the teets of big government. Rich people work for their money. Poor people want the rich to give them money. That’s the difference between an entitlement mentality and an entrepreneurial mentality.”

I’ve been thinking it’s just just the welfare class that has an entitlement mentality. The well-off who think they’re entitled to cheap labor, paying wages that won’t support a family, so entitled that they will break the laws or shape the laws to let poor immigrants in and drive down the wages of low-income Americans - what are they if not entitled?
if he or his sons mowed their own lawn,
they wouldn’t have this problem.
Gee! I didn’t know you were running for President! Learn something every day. Reaganesque appears to want to oppose your running. Ya think?

BRAVO! You nailed it!
Hmmmmm, my condo association employes a landscaping company that has hispanics on its payroll. How do I go about insuring they are legal or is it really any of my business?
Isn't it up to the employer to insure they are legal?
Brilliant!
“His timing is impeccable. LOL”
This is a body blow and it probably explains Mitts obsession with the religious issue this week as a distraction from this.
Hey Petronski it is the Boston Globe reporting here.
Yep. What part of their report is false?
Who is responsible for determining the legitimacy of its workers, the landscaping company or the individual who hires the landscaping company?
I'm not rich, I merely live in a condo association that hires a landscaping company to do the work the association members don't want to do. Is it my job to check the green cards of the landscaping workers?
It is the condo association’s job to hire a legal company.
