Omaha Mall Shooting .. Vanity Post
Vanity Post ^ | 12/06/07 | CometBaby

Posted on 12/06/2007 7:02:50 AM PST by CometBaby

As some of you know, I am from Omaha. Just my opinion, for what it’s worth, but I’m watching the reports on TV and Radio, both locally (here in Omaha) and nationally and I’m getting ticked off .. I have to speak out.

I've been listening to people who knew this kid, on a local radio station, talking about threats he has made. There was one classmate who claims he threatened to kill her and burn down her house. Then there are the friends from his clique who are defending him. One even supposedly threatened to kill another student who was talking about what a horrible person he was to do such a thing.

I am sick and tired of being told about how “shocked” the people who knew him were (that he would do such a thing). In spite of knowing he’d been in trouble with the law, was suicidal, depressed, emotionally disturbed, and had ideas of killing people.

The lady (he lived in her house) knew he had just dropped out of school, was emotionally unstable, diagnosed depressed, suicidal, just lost his girlfriend 2 weeks ago, just got fired from his pathetic job, that he felt he was nothing but a worthless piece of shit and didn't want to be a burden to anyone, anymore. This kid was probably exhibiting all of the classic signs of a time bomb, waiting to go off. And to top it off, he was supposedly playing with guns… the night before the killing spree!!

OF COURSE NOBODY EVER SAW IT COMING !!!!!

I can already feel the Brady minions coming out of the woodwork to grab up the SKS’s because nobody recognized this blatant danger to our community. And one other thing .. an SKS is NOT a “high powered” rifle!

Next, we are going to see signs all over the Malls saying not to bring in weapons. And how long before some nutcase announces that these poor victims deserved this, for wasting gas driving to the Mall (celebrating the HATED Christmas season, no less) in the first place! Who could have imagined it would ever come to this?

Makes you think it’s a real good idea to just shop online .. no hassles, no taxes and you don’t have to take your life into your hands! Thanks for letting me vent a bit.

ROFL the irony that that law would be 30.06. kinda like the mccarthy bill being 1022.

I carry a Beretta Tomcat .32cal with Glaser Safeties. It’s a double action semi-auto with a round up the pipe (as my LEO cousin says) and a spare mag. ... and yes, I do have a CPL .... I hate malls too (strange for a woman, no?) I’d rather shop at individual stores like Wally’s World, etc.

The SKS is a Russian semi-automatic carbine, designed in 1945 by Sergei Gavrilovich Simonov. The SKS is not, nor has it ever been, “a variant of a fully automatic gun.”

I was with you until this.

Admittedly, millions of deer have been taken by the .30-30. It’s still far less capable than what most folks choose to carry.

“I am very much a supporter of the 2nd Amendment, but the weapon the kid was carrying is exactly the weapon banned by the assault weapon law.”

It meets the medias very loose definition of an “assault weapon” and was likely one of the models or very similiar to those addressed by the assault weapons ban. This weapon does not meet the technical definition of an assault weapon.

The ban was not effective in any of its efforts. Even Janet Reno admitted that. If it was firing 3 round bursts then it was illegal unless he had a class 3 license. With his criminal background that is very unlikely.

“But this also means none of those assault weapon provisions in law would have prevented this, thus proving how useless they are.”

The laws only success was to increase prices and make it more difficult for law abiding people to purchase firearms. The anti-gunners have mostly given up on outright banning firearms. They are working to accomplish their goals through incrementalism. Make firearms and ammo expensive. Regulate them extensively to discourage ownership. They are also moving to make more and more offenses adequate justification for eliminating someones 2nd amendment rights permenantly.

“i’d put any handgun i own (except my bearcat) against a punk kid with an SKS.”

You probably wouldn’t even have to hit him. Most likely he would panic at the first sign of return fire.

I read a report that they boy just strolled into the mall with the rifle in is hand. Not concealed in a backpack, but in plain sight. I suppose it’s easy to armchair quarterback and say the signs were there all the time, but who believes that a homicidal murderer is in their midst? It’s such a rare event that people justifiably don’t believe that it will happen within their circle. However, when a camo-wearing kid strolls into the mall with his rifle grasped in his hand in plain sight...

A person with CCW, in the right place at the right time, could have shortened this shooting spree drastically.

It amazes me that people don't see that.

So - what would you have done if you had been sitting there with him?

I would have called the police, that night, and reported that he was dangerous. He had no business bringing a rifle into her home. She knew he had been in trouble. She knew his past history. She had heard his previous threats. She did NOTHING.

The next day, he called her 45 min before he went on his rampage. He expressed how unhappy and desperate he was. He told her there was a note that would explain everything and where to find it. You can disagree with me if you want, but I believe that last minute phone call was a plea for HELP. He wanted her to STOP HIM! Instead she found and read the note, it told how he was going to go out big .. and AGAIN .. she did .. NOTHING!!!!!

45 min BEFORE the rampage. She did NOTHING!!!! She went to work!

She was a Nurse and went to work. When the bodies began to arrive in ER of her hospital .. she immediately suspected it was him.

What would you have done? Even if the police did not react appropriately to such a report, I would have called them. It was the responsible thing to do.

I had a conversation with a woman at work who bragged that she had her ex-husband’s guns taken away for domestic violence. She crowed about how scared she would be if he was able to get hold of a gun. I asked her what he did for a living and she said he drove a gasoline tanker for Wilco!!!

Exactly. It’s not the Ritalin or Prozac or other popular drugs. It’s the utterly unfounded belief that as long as someone “is getting help” (usually meaning drugs and occasional “counselling”), then it’s fine to let them roam around free even though they’re still obviously mentally unstable.

Just once I'd like to hear a friend/acquaintance of one of these murderers say something like "he was a very emotionally disturbed kid with violent tendencies -- a human time bomb. ...so this news of him shooting up a mall doesn't exactly come as a big surprise to me."

You know, the truth.

You mean this guy broke the gun laws even before he started shooting people? There should be a law against that!

That seems to be the ambition of a generation. Fame.

There was a recent survey of the younger generation and that was their top goal in life--fame. I suddenly understood the success of Facebook and My Space.
