The recent national intelligence estimate that concluded that Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003 is just about the stupidest intelligence assessment I have ever read. It falls hook, line and sinker for a transparent bait and switch tactic employed not only by Iran, but by several other nuclear powers in the past.
The tactic is obvious and well-known to all intelligence officials with an IQ above room temperature. It goes like this: There are two tracks to making nuclear weapons: One is to conduct research and develop technology directly related to military use. That is what the United States did when it developed the atomic bomb during the Manhattan Project. The second track is to develop nuclear technology for civilian use and then to use the civilian technology for military purposes.

Dershowitz isn’t bad for a Clinton defending liberal
D is absolutely correct. Iran with all that enriched uranium, which they are “hiding” in plain sight, is a significant threat to the United States and our allies.
I think this statement underestimates the left's hatred of GWB and those who support him. I'm sure this report can be topped. :-)
It is srange to see Alan lining up with the President. Who’s agenda is Alan pushing here?
America’s agenda.
I don’f often agree with Alan, but he does recognize that Iran is a real threat. To attribute that to some other secret hidden agenda is asinine.
Your comment is even more blindly stupid than NIE’s assessment. Go back to DU where you belong.
Apparently, even some libs don't like the idea of fallout in their pool.
The fact is that Dershowitz is a staunch supporter of Israel, and a supporter of an aggressive war on terror. o while he is disgustingly liberal on many issues, he has, for example, supported the use of torture against terroorists in order to thwart their plans. Plus he’s just right on this, Iran is a threat and Iran with enriched uranium is a huge threat.
Sorry for the necessity of posting again but in my haste to point out your most obvious bias, I neglected to mention that you have joined FR just today. Is that so you can start your own misinformation campaign. DU is where you came from and DU is where you belong.
The Iranians may well be playing this out the slow, reliable way - enrich uranium and wait until you have enough for an entire program's worth of devices, not just one "here I am" shot. With uranium you can construct simpler gun-and-target designs. If I were trying this under the nose of international observation that's how I'd to it. But I'd try purchasing materials at the same time.
In the several decades during the run up to the war in Iraq, France under Chirac, either as PM or Pres, made scores of billions selling Hussein dual use technology and equipment, which could be put to use for peaceful industrial purposes, or for military weaponry. The trade was based on Hussein’s assertion that the stuff bought was for peaceful purposes. French commercial interests, in addition to simple greed on Chirac’s part, motivated the trade.
With this NIE, it appears the door may be opened to similar commerce with Iran, as long as it is “guaranteed” that the materials and technology sold is for peaceful nuclear energy. I wonder if American Bernard Schwartz-like personalities and businesses weren’t a force behing the estimate?
Dersh for SecState!
Welcome to FR! - even tho’ you’re either a fool or a troll.
I believe, although my memory may be faulty on this point, that Dershowitz also holds correct views re the Second Amendment as well as the mutually supportive relationship between government (the State) and religion, broadly construed, that the First Amendment prescribes.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Dershowitz is one of a number of prominent liberals who have broken ranks to oppose the global jihad. Christopher Hitchens is another.
Given the nature and magnitude of the threat, it is a remarkable demonstration of the power of the 60s anti-war meme that more don’t do so.
At least during the Vietnam war, the enemy were communists, so lefties were only being consistent (if depraved) in siding with them. Today, nothing but cultural inertia seems to drive the liberal anti-war meme.
I love the opening line.
Easy there big fella...
