Parents Return Unwanted Girl
The Melbourne Herald Sun ^ | December 10, 2007 | The Melbourne Herald Sun

A senior European diplomat in Hong Kong has promoted outrage by giving up the seven-year-old Korean girl he adopted with his wife as a baby.

The unnamed diplomat handed the girl to social workers in Hong Kong, saying the adoption had not worked out.

The man and his wife adopted the girl as a four-month-old in Korea, where he was working at the time, when they thought they could not conceive.

The wife since had two children and decided to hand the girl to social workers because the diplomat said the adoption had gone wrong, the Sunday Morning Post reported.

......The diplomat told the newspaper his family was struggling to cope with their decision and said his wife was having therapy after giving up the girl last year.

......The plight of the girl, described as healthy and happy, has sparked anger among members of Hong Kong's Korean community, many of whom flooded the country's consulate with offers of help.

In Korea, parents cannot return adopted children, but no such law exists in Hong Kong.

Not enough info.......but on the face of it the husband turned the child back and the wife now needs therapy? Weird.

These “parents” need a swift kick in the ass, not therapy-what about therapy for that poor child who has been rejected by the only family she’s ever known?

My two sons are both adopted. I’ve taught them that if we take in an animal, we are forever responsible for that life. Even if the critter turns out to be a pain in the rear end, we will be faithful to fulfill our obligations.

They usually don’t inspire thoughts of returning the mechandise until about age 13.

We have the same policy in our home. Of course, our obligation might consist of finding it another home, or having it put down if it's dangerous.

A child is not something you discard when it doesn't suit you. Where's the reverence for human life?

I knew a family that had adopted a baby girl and then the mother almost immediately got pregnant and had a daughter who therefore was less than a year younger than the adopted child.

The entire family immediately forgot about the adopted child, and to make matters worse, the little girl was a sort of podgy, dull-looking and timid creature who was a real klutz and did everything badly (possibly because of constant criticism). The natural child, her younger sister, on the other hand, was tall, slender, blonde, a born athlete (like her mother) and did everything well. Needless to say, things were horrible for the poor little adopted girl.

When she was about 9, she was molested in a school situation by an older man who hung around women with access to children (teachers, etc.), since she was a classic victim - insecure, rejected by her parents, etc. But her mother wouldn’t even press charges.

Maybe this child is lucky that they “sent her back.” I doubt that her life was particularly pleaseant before that, but she was probably fairly well brought up, and perhaps some good Christian family will adopt her.

As for the husband and wife and their dynamic, who cares? I think they’re both tripping down the broad and easy path...

It is very sad for the child, perhaps. But we don’t know much bout how she was treated and is it really good for the child to be where she is not wanted?

So judging from the source of the report, this is an Australian diplomat who decides to return unwanted children after seven years?

Why should children and agencies push for adoption if you get to just ‘give them back’ not unlike foster care.

God bless you! I have many friends who have adopted Korean children and they are all model families.
