Not since 1952 has the nation entered a presidential year with greater seeming uncertainty as to who will face off in November. Early that year, Tennessee Sen. Ernest Kefauver upset Harry Truman in New Hampshire, relieving the nation by dashing Harry's hopes for another four years. The Republican race would be a titanic struggle between the Eastern Establishment's Gen. Dwight Eisenhower and "Mr. Republican," Ohio Sen. Robert Taft, the conservative paragon. Splitting the primaries between them, Ike and Taft fought all the way to the convention, where Ike's Texas delegates were seated and Bob Taft's booted.

No.
HELL, NO !
Much as Buchanan would like it to be, the race is still wide-freaking-open.
Pat who?
Huck you Pat.
Hey, Buchanan, it’s ESTES Kefauver, not Ernest.
I agree Giuliani was stupid to not seriously contest Iowa. That has put him behind in even Florida. You have to scrap all the time if you want this job.
As much as I disagree with most of what Pat says he may be close here. But looking at daily Rasmussen poll numbers it still looks pretty wide open. Mitt and McCain are ahead of Rudy now.
Rasmussen poll numbers
12/20/07
13% Rudy
21% Huck
12% Fred
15% Mitt
15% John
“And though he seems ideally suited to the party,...”
I was just thinking the same thing. How is he not in the lead? I mean, the GOP candidate doesn’t get the nomination?
I agree with you... I think is right. There is NO WAY that Rudy is going to be able to survive going 0-4. I can make the case that if Romney wins Iowa, it will be his to lose (he will then win NH)
Lemme guess, Patrick Buchanan is a liberal RINO too, right? Or is he getting bribed by the Romney campaign as well?
Buchanan’s not a Republican, he left it a long time ago. As I said, if it’s a choice between AIDS (Joe Isuzu Romney) or terminal brain cancer (Huckster), I’m going to have the lasagna.
Had him confused with Ernest T. Bass.
You forget that your guy in this race is actually the “eastern establishment” guy in a race between Huck and Mitt!
These are just moronic gaffes. Does anybody bother proofreading these people’s columns anymore ?
I guess not, and Buchanan lost it long ago anyway. Was Truman even running in 1952?
Pat has turned out to be a real fruitcake. The Republican race is wide open Pat. Get a life.
It ain’t over by a long shot. Remember, Pat gets his paycheck from the mainstream media.
How much bang for the buck do you think Ron Paul will get from his fast growing energetic base and record breaking campaign fund? I think this is new ground. Predictions like this seem more like damage control and steering tactics not mere observation.
He must’ve been floating the notion, just as LBJ was in ‘68, but both were just simply too unpopular by then. Truman never forgave Ike for turning down his offer to be the Dem nominee and badmouthed him for the next 20 years. The irony is that Ike’s failure to do much work for the GOP resulted in the Democrat control of Congress for 40 years and JFK’s fradulent election in ‘60.
