It is ironic that people who support an industry that only exists because of government subsidy and protection spend so much time portraying themselves as being opposed to the interference of government.
Tobacco has been in bed with government for the past 40 years. It’s a little late to speak up now and say you don’t care for the company.

And you may be right about smoking killing people. But its the SMOKERS that are dying, NOT people breathing second hand smoke. You couldnt get enough tar in your lungs from someone elses cigarette smoke unless you were in a room with no windows and doors 24 hours a day. You are right on that point. The "science" behind declaring second hand smoke a Class A Carcinogen is even more specious that the "science" behind Global Warming.

"What most people really object to when they object to a free market is that it is so hard for them to shape it to their own will. The market gives people what the people want instead of what other people think they ought to want. At the bottom of many criticisms of the market economy is really lack of belief in freedom itself. The essence of political freedom is the absence of coercion of one man by his fellow men. The fundamental danger to political freedom is the concentration of power. The existence of a large measure of power in the hands of a relatively few individuals enables them to use it to coerce their fellow men. Preservation of freedom requires either the elimination of power where that is possible, or its dispersal where it cannot be eliminated. It essentially requires a system of checks and balances, like that explicitly incorporated in our Constitution..."

Illinois pretty much gets the kind of government they deserve.
Chicago gets the kind of government it deserves, and then inflicts it upon the rest of the state. Compared to the rest of the state, Chicago might as well be a foreign country.

The lawyers would have the carcass picked clean within a year.
Actually, in a world with real justice this probably wouldn't happen. If you buy and use a product with the understanding that there is some danger associated with it, you assume liability for that risk. Not the guy selling the product. By your logic, we might as well sue every car and firearms manufacturer into the ground.

Leaving aside the rights argument for a moment, surely you can acknowledge that the predicted downturn in business for restaurants and bars has failed to materialize in states that have enacted similar bans in the past.
In my case, I can't. I live a few minutes from a town that got increasingly nanny in it's legislation. In the past ten years, the population has dropped by a third, mostly because any kind of place to work has relocated outside the city.

Good or bad depends entirely on how much you are making off the bootleg sales. Just ask the Gov...

"surely you can acknowledge that the predicted downturn in business for restaurants and bars has failed to materialize in states that have enacted similar bans in the past."
Actually in just about every mom and pop operation it HAS hurt the bottom line. Just because a new, shiny bar opens up across the street and has customers it doesn't help the businesses that were hurt. How does a cigar bar stay in business if they are suddenly declared illegal, like in the state of WA? I'd say that revenues of zero dollars would represent a "downturn".
