Taking away business property rights and treating adults like children is not good government.

Next thing you know, they’ll be telling businesses who they can or cannot hire.

Bad in so many ways, but the worst of all:

A source of revenue (tobacco taxes) is severely restricted. This would not be so bad, by itself, but the revenue from this source has ALREADY been dedicated to certain programs, which shall then have to be funded from the general revenue sources, either reducing that amount available to other programs, or instituting a cry for “higher taxes” on other revenue sources.

Illinois pretty much gets the kind of government they deserve.

If it wasn’t for Chicago, Illinois would be a great place to live.

Sorry, I'm tired of smelling coworkers smoke just because they don't care about anyone else but there nasty habit. I can't agree with you in this situation. Cigarettes kill plain and simple. If people would be responsible about it this wouldn't be an issue, but most are not.

Smoking bans are just turning up the heat on the frog. However, there are quite a few Americans who are not frogs, and for these the result is increased disrespect for the law. That’s simmering on the back burner of the same stove.

It is a trampling of individual rights, the right to property. It is more dangerous than mere business property rights.

You are correct to point out that the debate is about property rights.

We are all guests on other peoples property, we should follow the rules of the host, or not visit.

Those that talk about being annoyed by smoke are really saying they are annoyed by individuals having property rights.

I understand, but a statewide ban is not the way to go. Let the merchants decide. It can happen if enough pressure from folks like yourself is brought to bear.

I myself don't like going into a restaurant and smelling the cigarette smoke, but I don't adhere to state government decrees.

If life were fair, Chicago would be either a separate state, or in Wisconsin.

Actually, it is the “Collar Counties” and suburban Cook County, that hold the counterbalance, such as it is, to Chicago city politics.

Is this just a ban on smoking in public places, such as bars, restaurants, businesses, public builidngs and the like? If so, this is kind of old hat. Such bans are in place all over the country, you know.

You can say that again.

Chicago politicians are a crass, vulgar lot.

I agree the government should not pass laws affecting property rights.

Here are the latest poll results:

The statewide smoking ban is ...
good for Illinois. 36.1%
bad for Illinois. 63.9%
Total votes: 310
Results not scientific

You’re right, it is old hat, but that doesn’t make it any less offensive. I don’t smoke and never have, and I love walking into a restaurant or bar with no smoke, but if patrons can choose whether or not to go in and spend their money, then the government has no business regulating. Even more offensive is the fabricated “justification” that the reason for the ban is to protect the other employees. How disingenious can you get?

I agree with you that merchants and businesses should decide. I don’t like government regulations. The problem is that some arrogant people don’t care about anyone but there own nasty habits and would lite up anyhow. I work in a place that has a no tobacco policy and people still lite up.
