Volcano erupts in Chile, covering area in ash
By Matthew Moore and agencies
Last Updated: 1:50pm GMT 02/01/2008A volcano has erupted in southern Chile, sending a column of smoke miles into the sky.
Telegraph TV:
Tourists and park workers
have been forced to flee ^
Lava is spurting from the mouth of the active Llaima volcano, in the Conguillio National Park, and the surrounding area is covered in ash.
More than 150 tourists and park workers have been evacuated and the emergency services have been placed on "early alert" should tectonic activity increase.
There are no reports of any injuries. Before the eruption, people in the towns closest to the volcano said they heard loud noises underground.
The Llaima is among the most active of the dozens of volcanoes in Chile. It erupted last May, but its most recent major explosion was in 1994.
It is not yet clear whether this eruption will be sustained, but authorities are drawing up plans to stage wider evacuations if necessary.
The town of Melipeuco, home to at least 5,000 people, is eight miles away. The nearest city is Temuco, more than 50 miles away.
The Llaima volcano, which translates as "Blood Veins", is 10,253-foot high.
Who’s buying the carbon credits for this thing?
Global Warming is always AL GORES fault!
Ash alert! Ash alert!
Gosh, I’ve always wanted to say that.
(P.S. Hint: Freeper lore)
Isn’t “Chili Volcano” an oxymoron? LOL!
;^)
Dunno. Some of those chilis can be pretty hot...

I hear it put out a lot of CO2. In fact, it would only take 17.43 of these eruptions to equal Al Gore's monthly carbon footprint.
We really do need a life...lol. But politics was wearing me out.
Chili has cool volcanoes
“While there are not that many molecules of any one given element packed in any one place”
That is not necessarily true.
I would like to compliment you for explaining the vulcanic nature of the Earth in laymen’s terms.
Good communication is having everyone getting a ‘picture’ in their head.
Great communication is having everyone getting the same ‘picture’.
You did great!
“Current theory is that we were reduced to a few 10s of thousands, causing an evolutionary bottleneck.”
You would think that an evolutionary bottleneck might be a good thing.
Wonder what it would have been like without it?

Actually, an additional factor in the heat balance of the earth is the production of heat by nuclear forces in the earth’s interior. The heat loss was a big unsolved question to scientists and mathematicians until nuclear energy was discovered.
Barringer Crater in Arizona was 50,000 years ago. Anyone have information on effects from that? Toba caused a bottleneck in population that I read was as few as 5 to 10,000 humans.
Llaima is one of Chile’s two most active volcanos (the other is Villarrica). It had at least 32 VEI 3 eruptions in the 20th Century, the last in 1988. It had a VEI 4 in 1640 (VEI=Volcanic Explosivity Index). [Source- “Encyclopedia of Volcanoes”, Sigurdsson, 2000]
