Does Huck have a Catholic Problem
Politico ^ | 01/11/2008 | Jonathan Martin

Back at Politico World HQ for a brief respite before heading onto Michigan I've been able to catch up a bit on some reading.

These maps, courtesy of the PolySigh blog, tell an interesting story.

It appears that Romney defeated Huck in the more heavily Catholic counties along the Mississippi River in eastern Iowa.

That Mitt was stronger in this part of the state and Huck better off in evangelical-heavy western Iowa was known even before the votes for cast. It wasn't just religion — Romney had worked eastern Iowa hard and had a good base of support there.

But the correlation between Huck's losses and Catholic counties is so precise that it can't be completely ignored. Catholics in places like Dubuque, Iowa, are just as anti-abortion as Huck. But did they not go for his overt emphasis on faith?

Keep an eye on Macomb County, Mich., just outside of Detroit, next Tuesday and we'll know the answer.

What is alarming is that the folks I meet in person never talk about us the way they do on FR. I have to wonder what the evangelicals I know in person are actually thinking.

This would be an errant teaching. Are you sure you weren't supposed to tell them that Christ died on the cross at Calvary for their sins...that the Bible was clear that someone trusting in their own righteousness (works) to get to Heaven instead of Christ were not going to get to Heaven? Hard to argue with the Bible there.

Funny you should say that...that is what I meant by "saved."

I am a Born-Again Christian.

When I have asked my Catholic husband, my Catholic friends, and the Priest who came to speak with us: "What leads to Heaven and eternal life?"

They have ALWAYS answered...to a person...."that I believe that Christ died on the Cross for my sins and my Salvation."

Surprised?

FYI, the Catholic Church is made up of 23 separate, autonomous churches; the Roman Catholic Church is just one of them (albeit the biggest one).

The Church has many different rites but we are all one Church. I wouldn't say that there is autonomy in the seperate churches since they are all under the Pope but there is some measure of flexibilty there. The western Catholic Church (what people think of as "Roman") is actually called the Latin Rite Church.

You are a target for evangelization to the ones that care. I do have to say, though, that years ago there was a thread that couldn’t seem to die. It was an extremely thorough discussion of Catholics vs. Evangelicals. I have to highly respect the scholarship of some of the Catholics on this board.

I’m not getting soft, but I know some Catholics, am friends with some Catholics, work for a Catholic, and pray for Catholics. The way I see it, they just need to be saved. We’re not mad at you guys or anything, we just find the teachings of your church to not line up with the Bible.

Huck has a FOX news problem. You gotta wonder why they cut his marriage question and answer out of their re-broadcasts. Why the answer that got more applause than anything else in the debate isn't being shown in anyway on FOX news. Fox news that claims to be fair and balanced.

Huck's real problem is that the New York Republican Power players are more opposed to him than anybody else.

No. It is my experience that most Catholics don’t know what their church teaches. They must keep the sacraments.

I’m not a Huckabee supporter, I am truly undecided, but I also thought he handled this question very well (assuming you are talking about the “wives submitting to their husbands”). That one made me cringe when it was asked. He definitely seems to be most in his element when he is talking about his beliefs.

Thank you for the friendly comment. I have the same opinion in regard to evangelicals.

While I think that what you said is the case for many evangelicals it unfortunately not true for all. I have had some evangelicals treat me like you might expect them to treat an abortion provider.

This is especially sad since we could be working together towards common goals like spreading family values, ending abortion, etc.

That’s fine in the political world, but you won’t see us Independent Fundamental Baptists linking up with Catholics church-wise.

That being said, I’ll stand on a street corner with you any time holding up a sign protesting a planned parenthood coming into the neighborhood.

That works for me. Since this is primarily a political site I think we would be well advised to make nice and work together to defeat the liberals.

quite different than Southern Baptists I grew up around

Dirty little secret...we were taught that you Southern Baptists were heretics too! The fun never ended....I think they've largely gotten over that.

I have done quite a bit of thinking about religion in the rural areas of Iowa. We have an odd mix of Mennonite, Apostolic, Lutherans, and Catholics from Ireland, Germany, etc.

The Catholic Churches are many...but back in the 1800's, those who were Catholic or Lutheran in Germany (for example) may not have been able to travel 10 miles to go to Church each week.

Hence, each tiny little town seems to have a Methodist Church, and another...more...shall we say....Puritanical Church.

Traveling preachers founded most of them....I can see why the traditional Catholics and Lutherans would gravitate towards the more strict of the two. I have never really understood why they became hostile to the Catholics...but those who arrived here had to forgo Church, or embrace the teachings that were available. After a couple of generations, I guess it became status quo.

He also deliberately stirred up anti-Mormon bigotry with his “Don’t (Mormons) think Jesus and Satan are brothers?” jab at Mitt Romney.

Don't they believe that?

Does Huckabee make Catholics uncomfortable?

Yes, as do most Protestant fundamentalists.

McCain was undoubtedly Baptized as an Episcopalian, therefore he would not need to be re-baptized. I am not a big fan of McCain, but lets not spin this into something it’s not.

One can be a preacher and be incorrect. That's just a fact. Huckabee seems to be of the persuasion that Jesus would want "government to work" or for "government to provide home". This is absurd. He's right on God but wrong on everything else. It happens.

But of course one can preach and be flat out WRONG, the Bible is filled with examples of WRONG preachers. That is how one can *test* the fruit. Christ walked this earth and He set the standard which again is the measurement by which one can *test* the fruit of any who comes in His name claiming to be of Him. There is laid out for all who will read what kind of government God declares that received the blessings and protection from Him. But oh no majority of modern man has gotten to smart even for God.

Now what denomination was Jesus????

Yeah, and smart people figured out that Huckabee was making a joke.

Exactly, everything is a joke to Huckabee, except when he starts passing his collection I mean tax plate. Now how much money did God require of His children??? How many times did Jesus take a collection and call it compassionate giving?

Well that is the Truth. Jaysun didn't bother me, I understand he is just seated in a seat with a limited view of the world and faith.

As I said earlier, I was raised Southern Baptist, I was baptisted, more than Once. I was even a Youth director in a Southern Baptist Church. I married a man who was raised Catholic. We became Methodist. I belonged to a book club of 12 women, All Catholic, except one Jew, and one Unitarian. I had a friend who was of the B'hai faith. I have a brother who is a pastor, of a small church that broke off from a Southern Baptist Church. I have attended Catholic Mass. My husbands ancestors started some of the first Luthern Churches in this country in Pennsylvania

I could go on and on. Jaysum should read James A. Mitchner's book "Chesapeake", to have a better understanding of religion in this country.

THe same way you judge now you will judge when you stand in the presence of GOD.

That’s fine with me. I’ve never been an embezzler or a womanizer or a lying cheating money grubbing scumbag. If I’m judged according to this, I should get very high marks.

Does everyone know that John McCain proclaimed himself to be a Baptist now

That's amazing. He now belongs to the same group he called "agents of intolerance"

How does he live with himself knowing he is an "agents of intolerance"?

Catholics are used to voting for Presidents who don’t share their faith. We haven’t had many Catholics, and the ones who do run aren’t very “Catholic” at all!!

Anyway, I think the faith issue isn’t nearly as important as the candidate’s stand on issues, and I think Catholics in general are very savvy about the issues.

I just hate to see so many Catholics continue to vote DemonRAT! Hopefully with Pope Benedict at the helm and the move toward more traditional liturgy more and more Catholics will discover our Faith completely and fully and those with “issues” with the Church will move to where they belong—Protestant denominations!
