Does Huck have a Catholic Problem
Politico ^ | 01/11/2008 | Jonathan Martin

Posted on 01/11/2008 7:10:12 PM PST by Andy'smom

Back at Politico World HQ for a brief respite before heading onto Michigan I've been able to catch up a bit on some reading.

These maps, courtesy of the PolySigh blog, tell an interesting story.

It appears that Romney defeated Huck in the more heavily Catholic counties along the Mississippi River in eastern Iowa.

That Mitt was stronger in this part of the state and Huck better off in evangelical-heavy western Iowa was known even before the votes for cast. It wasn't just religion — Romney had worked eastern Iowa hard and had a good base of support there.

But the correlation between Huck's losses and Catholic counties is so precise that it can't be completely ignored. Catholics in places like Dubuque, Iowa, are just as anti-abortion as Huck. But did they not go for his overt emphasis on faith?

Keep an eye on Macomb County, Mich., just outside of Detroit, next Tuesday and we'll know the answer.

I’m a lifelong Catholic and I will be voting for Huck in the Feb. 5th IL primary.

I can’t speak for Catholics, but Huckabee sure makes this conservative uncomfortable.

In the past, I have had run-ins with a group of new evangelicals. In listening to their public and private discussions of doctrinal issues, it was clear that they did not consider Catholics to be Christian, just as they did not consider Mormons or Jehovah’s Witnesses to be. Of course, they would never answer a direct question on this point, and I was never able to tease out a definitive statement. But when they listed who they thought to be Christian, their list never included those denominations.

I think Huckabee makes most people uncomfortable... The only ones it seems that he DOESN’T make uncomfortable are evangelical fundamentalist Christians who seem to be more concerned about his expressed faith than his liberal record...

Just my $.02...

I think Jonathan Martin is reading more into this than there is though really... After the stunt he pulled in regards to Thompson I’m not inclined to trust his judgement on ANYTHING frankly...

It would seem that Martin is trying to make this race about religion by even bringing this up frankly... That shouldn’t be the focus in this race, IMHO. What SHOULD be the focus is the type of record these candidates have in regards to Conservative issues — on that score both Huckabee AND Romney have some problems to say the least.

I am a Catholic and Huck does not make me uncomfortable at all. I like him. I am not sure who I am voting for though.

I’m a Catholic and he makes me uncomfortable, but the two aren’t directly related (for me). He makes me uncomfortable b/c he seems to believe that Christianity = Socialism.
It’s the socialism part that makes me uncomfortable. ; )

I was wondering if Martin was trying to “stir the pot” so to speak even bringing this angle up. I don’t think the whole “Catholics aren’t _real_ Christians” viewpoint of many born-again Christians is any real secret, frankly...

Why would a preacher for Jesus make any Christian uncomfortable???? Just asking.

My read is just a bit different. I’m literally surrounded by Evangelicals and consider myself to be one. I think they consider Catholics misguided on some things but still Christian. Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses are seen as way off base, cults if you will.

They will if he needs votes, but will the cult thing work again? Na, he will have to try something new.

Stay tuned.

Does everyone know that John McCain proclaimed himself to be a Baptist now, when he was campaigning in SC a few months ago? LOL. This is after a lifetime of calling himself an Episcopalian.

It is beginning to appear more and more that this is the case. If so than I have no use for these people.

Maybe it has something to do with the ads he ran there. He called himself the “Christian” candidate. It makes other Christians uncomfortable.
