In the past, I have had run-ins with a group of new evangelicals. In listening to their public and private discussions of doctrinal issues, it was clear that they did not consider Catholics to be Christian, just as they did not consider Mormons or Jehovah’s Witnesses to be. Of course, they would never answer a direct question on this point, and I was never able to tease out a definitive statement. But when they listed who they thought to be Christian, their list never included those denominations.

I was wondering if Martin was trying to “stir the pot” so to speak even bringing this angle up. I don’t think the whole “Catholics aren’t _real_ Christians” viewpoint of many born-again Christians is any real secret, frankly...

My read is just a bit different. I’m literally surrounded by Evangelicals and consider myself to be one. I think they consider Catholics misguided on some things but still Christian. Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses are seen as way off base, cults if you will.

Does everyone know that John McCain proclaimed himself to be a Baptist now, when he was campaigning in SC a few months ago? LOL. This is after a lifetime of calling himself an Episcopalian.

I’m not voting for Huckabee in the primary but it is true Catholics are not Christians they are ROMAN Catholics. They know Christ like I know President Bush. I know about President Bush but I don’t know him in a personal way.
And so are the Mormons and J W.

I’m a Romney supporter.

But when they listed who they thought to be Christian, their list never included those denominations.

Basically, anyone who doesn't accept their dogmatic worldview is either a second-class Christian or a cult. Deciding who to assign to hell or merely second-class Christian status may vary slightly based on who you talk to. Not so much different than the Lieberal State Church in this aspect.

It strikes me as a pretty short-sighted way to build a winning coalition in politics when p*ssing on those who have theological differences seems to be more important than fighting those who want to take away our God-given freedoms and our heads. The older I get, the less patient I grow with these types.

The evangelicals on FR will tell you flat out that Catholics are going straight to hell.

I have had run-ins with a group of new evangelicals. In listening to their public and private discussions of doctrinal issues, it was clear that they did not consider Catholics to be Christian,

Same old mantra some of ya'll here insist on eh?

50 year old southern baptist here....fundamentalist-literalist-almost charismatic...

yet no one i know of here thinks Catholics are not Christian...never heard that in my life.

we think you guys should listen more to your Pope on some issues like abortion for instance and we were never big on liberation theology, your views of Mary, the need for clergy as conduit to the Lord, confession, you guys a guilt laden/we are shame laden...etc

but never have I had a preacher say ya'll were not Christian....never.

As for Mormons....I think are different...almost post-Christian Christian....like Sufis to Islam or Noachide to Judaism....hard to tell....it's their business.

Jehovah Witness...wow....they are strange birds....hard to say...

Unitarians....nope.

many protestants.....apostate nowadays sadly....good works salvation/faith neglectors....who often dismiss the old covenant when it suits them.

I don't think this Pope is apostate at all....he seems to stick to his creed even if it's a bit grating to we Prods....but a lot of Catholics are milquetoast I seen....they just go thru the motions. Not the ones here mind you. I wish more were devout...the West would be far better off culturally...they used to be a cornerstone and dependable.

You may not like Fundamentalists...which are different from Evangelicals......but Fundamentalists are hardly ever lapsed...by their very nature they are true believers.

this is not directed at you but the hostility directed at and the ignorance of Fundamentalist/Evangelical/Charismatic Christianity on this a right wing forum....is appalling and a sad testament to our times. I cannot imagine Dwight Eisenhower having to apologize or explain being a Christian in order to run for national office. It's nuts.

It's not all evangelicals, but there definitely is a portion of the group that believes this. I personally know several. And on the other hand, all of the wacky things I've heard about Mormons has never been borne out by the Mormons that I know. So guess which group I distrust...

interesting, I don't see why they would think Catholics are not Christian, especially considering they derive their version of the trinity from the Catholics Nicene_Creed
