The Real Mike Huckabee
[posted online on January 11, 2008]
Of all the right-wing figures who have promoted Mike Huckabee's extraordinary political rise from a backwater church to the national pulpit of a presidential campaign--and there are many--perhaps none know the former Arkansas governor and current Republican presidential front-runner better than Jay Cole. A Baptist minister based in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with a right-wing radio talk show of his own, Cole has been instrumental in inspiring Huckabee's rise over more than two decades. Indeed, when Huckabee was the governor of Arkansas, it was Cole who persuaded him to arrange the release from prison of a convicted rapist, Wayne Dumond, who had become a born-again evangelical in prison--the most controversial act of Huckabee's career, which still dogs him on the campaign trail.
I spoke to Cole by telephone a week before Huckabee's surprise victory in the Iowa caucuses on January 3. He was supremely confident that his saintly friend would prevail over the hosts of darkness. "Mike is one of the finest and most gracious individuals God has ever placed on Earth," Cole told me in his thick Southern drawl. "Not only does he have speaking ability, he has the Lord looking over him."

I apparently read and write far better than you -— and so I am finished with you, just as I am finished with Mr. Huckabee.
I have lived in many places; California, Alaska, Texas, Florida, N.Carolina, W. Virgina and even Kansas
I spent a couple of months working in Little Rock about 2 years ago.
Little Rock has the worst drivers in the United States.
Apparently the ability to think is not a requirement for the operation of automobiles in Arkansas.
It is evil that you are letting yourself be so deluded by such a deceptive phoney like Mike Huckabee.
Interesting tagline, Unspun.
God, please save us from Mike Huckabee’s ego.
Do you deny the parole board refused parole to Dummond before Huckabee became Gov? And do you deny that, before the parole board took any other action, he announced his intention to free Dummond? Do you deny the parole board then changed their ruling, and paroled Dummond before Huckabee commuted his sentence?
Sorry, but there is a ton of documentary evidence that Huckabee WANTED Dummond on the streets, and the parole board only stepped in AFTER that public announcement.
Huckabee has been very deceptive about this incident. His statement required parsing - like Clinton. But then, as Huckabee keeps boasting, a state that loved Bill Clinton kept returning him to office as well!
Thats where things stood when Huckabee took office on July 15, 1996. Last August, Huckabee told me (Byron York) he had his doubts about Dumonds guilt, and also felt sorry for him over the castration attack. On September 20, just weeks after taking office, Huckabee announced that he intended to set Dumond free, saying that there were serious questions as to the legitimacy of his guilt.
Drivers here in LA are getting worse and worse as well.
Almost like they have no fear of death.

Just as his surge in the polls began, Huckabee addressed the student body of the late Rev. Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University in November. There, he assured his enraptured audience that his sudden rise had nothing to do with his “easy-going” style. “There’s only one explanation for [my surge] and it’s not a human one,” Huckabee insisted, inspiring gales of applause from the overflow crowd. “It’s the same power that helped a little boy with two fish and five loaves feed a crowd of five thousand people.”

There is a reason this man is referred to as the Huckster. The above is a good example. People, like Bill Clinton, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Mike Huckabee, all believe, BELIEVE, they are different than you and me. Somehow they are special. And that generally results in them doing things beyond the ethical boundaries (or legal boundaries) and believing that the rules and laws which bind other folks just don’t apply to them.
This is the problem with Huckabee.
He has learned from the master, Bill Clinton, how to turn a phrase, how to turn factual accusation back up with historical fact back on those who confront him on issues, and then he uses this “I feel your pain” garbage ALA Clinton.
He is simply a Bill Clinton in a Republican Suit.
That prefaces Huckabee explaining to him, that he could not grant him a commutation, since he would not be supervised. And whether that was sugar-coating it a bit for Dumond, or simply stated the facts, the conclusion is the same. Huckabee refused comutation -- at least three times.
Feel free to provide the context.
It's amazing what "conservatives" will do -- especially when they get to South Carolina.
When I first saw Mike Huckabee at the debates I thought, what a great guy, with a great sense of humor.
He seems so positive — and funny!
Why don’t conservatives support him?
He’s a governor, he’s pro-life ... why not?
Then I began to learn about Mike Huckabee.
The ugly truth came out ... and as time went just became uglier and uglier.
Then I started to listen to what he had to say.
And I swear, if I shut my eyes, and didn’t know I was listening to a Republican, I could have sworn I was listening to a liberal democrat.
Huckabee is bad for the Republican Party.
Huckabee was bad for Arkansas.
Huckabee would be horrible for America.
Good post Unspun....but let the blind remain blind still.
Nice try, to flip-flop the principles of allegation and evidence.
Are you alleging? Then cite your evidence.
Its evil if he lies and acts like a Christian
Its evil if he lies about his role in releasing a rapist
IF is the key word, its a presidential campaign,he can handle lies, but if he is the liar, where is the shame and evil then?
Personally,I don’t know, but I am sure the truth will come to light
Here, you leap from innuendo to baseless accusation. That is called character assassination. Shame on you.
I am stating that the parole board denied release. Then Huckabee took office, and he announced he would release Dummoond. This resulted in a 30-120 day review process. There was an uproar over his announcement, and Huckabee met with the Parole Board. The Parole Board then reversed their precious decision, and paroled Dummond 4 days prior to Huckabee needing to put up or shut up.
Those are facts. Look them up - I’m not going to do the research again for you at 9:15PM.
