Thompson Camp Reports "Smear" Fliers Misleading Record (accuses Huckabeans of more "dirty tricks")

ABC's Christine Byun reports: Republican candidate Fred Thompson’s campaign is accusing rival Mike Huckabee’s campaign of more "dirty tricks" in South Carolina.

They say fliers with misleading information about the former Tennessee senator’s abortion record were placed on parked cars at their event venue last night (http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/01/thompson-lets-g.html). The fliers insinuate Thompson voted for funding for abortions through a bill that supported Planned Parenthood. Thompson –- who has received the endorsement of national anti-abortion organization National Right to Life –- did vote for the bill in question, H.R. 3061. However, the bill specifically states that it does not include federal funding for abortions and does not mention Planned Parenthood. The flier quotes Scripture –- Proverbs 31:8 –- and includes a picture of the former Senator.

"Sen. Thompson worked in the Senate to ensure that federal funds did not go to abortion," a Thompson campaign spokesman, who provided a copy of a flier, said.

Earlier this week, the Thompson campaign accused Huckabee supporters of push-polling calls.

“These deceptive tactics are yet another sad sign that Gov. Huckabee cannot engage in a substantive discussion of the important public policy issues facing our country,” Dean Rice, the South Carolina campaign manager, said in a written statement.

5 spaces? That's strange.

Rudy doesn't claim to be a conservative.

Huckabee is at least conservative on social issues (You can't that away from him).

McCain has been all over the place on some issues, but he still scores an 82% (I'm assuming they grade on a curve).

Thompson is a conservative, no one disputes that.

Hunter should have dropped out a long time ago.

That leaves Romney... not a conservative bone in his body.

Looks like everything on the flyer is true. Fred isn't going to be able to deliver a win for McCain.

Fred has a 100% pro-life record. That's why he was endorsed by the National Right To Life and their state affiliates....

NATIONAL RIGHT TO LIFE SHAKES UP RACE FOR REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION:
Nation’s largest pro-life group endorses Fred Thompson

WASHINGTON – Marking the first major endorsement by a national grassroots organization in the Republican presidential contest, National Right to Life, the nation’s largest pro-life organization representing pro-lifers in fifty state affiliates and more than 3,000 local chapters, today announced its endorsement of former Senator Fred Thompson for President of the United States.

“As the first major grassroots organization to enter the Republican presidential race, National Right to Life is proud to endorse Fred Thompson,” stated Wanda Franz, Ph.D., president of National Right to Life. “Our endorsement is a testament to Senator Thompson’s long-standing pro-life record, his commitment to unborn children, and our belief in his ability to win.”

In making its endorsement, National Right to Life considered the position of candidates on the life issues, their records on the life issues and their ability to win. Fred Thompson has had a strong, consistent pro-life record throughout his political career. Thompson opposes abortion and believes the 1973 abortion on demand Supreme Court decision was wrongly decided and must be reversed. During his eight years in the United States Senate, he always opposed using tax dollars to promote or pay for abortion and supported the many pro-life measures such as parental notice and consent.

Thompson has also stated his opposition to the kind of stem cell research that requires killing human embryos, while supporting the kind of stem cell research that harms no one and is the only kind producing cures.

Since announcing his candidacy in September, Fred Thompson has run second only to pro-abortion candidate Rudy Giuliani for the Republican nomination in the overwhelming majority of national polls. As pro-lifers throughout the nation begin to unite behind his candidacy, he will be well positioned to win the nomination and the presidency.

“Unlike endorsements by single individuals, this endorsement was made by representatives of statewide pro-life organizations across America which themselves are comprised of local community chapters and grassroots activists,” said Dr. Franz./b>

The National Right to Life Committee is the nation’s largest pro-life group with affiliates in all 50 states and over 3,000 local chapters nationwide. National Right to Life works through legislation and education to protect those threatened by abortion, infanticide, euthanasia and assisted suicide.

"Huckabee is autographing Bibles now!"

Then he will have big problems. Man cannot sign off on on the Bible, Torah, Koran, or the Confucian scripts. If he wants to be a saint, he will die like one. You don't treat the Word of God like just another book signing. There is a certain quantity of respect required.

Using the name of God in vain is not the way to go.

Is there anything on the flyer that isn’t true? Did he vote to fund planned parenthood? yes or no.

This is why I am convinced that Huckster’s press conference in Iowa to announce that he had decided not to engage in smear ads, after which he promptly showed the ad, was utterly, totally, and completely dishonest.

The Huckster was being his utterly dishonest self in Iowa when he denied planning to run smear ads against Romney, then ran the ad for the media (remember, Pastor Huckabee had no money then, so he needed all the free showings of the smear ad that he could get) and this smear aginst Thompson proves it. Again he’s showing what an utterly dishonest person he is.

But he’ll get away with it just as he did with his earlier dirty trick because he’s the favored Republican of the mainstream media — because they know that Huckster is a liberal who can’t win in November.

It sucks when when Huckabee finally hits back with the same type of attacks that have been used against him since Iowa. This would be payback for the hatchet job during the debates.

No, it wouldn't.

"Payback" would be to come out swinging in the next debate. These smears are not only dishonorable and immoral, it is illegal under South Carolina law.

If Huckabee is indeed behind it, as you imply, then he's a coward and a liar.
