Although I believe that Thompson's positions are still the most conservative of the remaining candidates (that is, the positions that they state), followed by Romney, Huckabee, McCain, and Rudy (and I will not vote for Rudy in any case)...I have a sinking impression that Thompson is going to benefit his friend McCain in this.

He is drawing delegates and votes, and as long as he stays in, I will support him. But, I fear that if he drops out, that he will throw his support behind McCain.

I hope I am wrong...and I would really rather see Thompson as the ultimate candidate...but my gut tells me he is going to end up supporting McCain, which I will not do.

Duncan Hunter was my first choice, but he is gone now...followed by Thompson (enthusiastically), Romney (less enthusiastically), Huckabee and McCain thereafter (holding nose), and voting write-in or third party if its Rudy vs, Hillary...and as I have explained before this is because I personally will not put my name down in support of anyone who is an open supporter of abortion or homsexuality.

I guess we'll wait and see.

What are your thoughts on a McCain/Thompson ticket?

Although I am not a supporter of any of the now candidates; I did read the questions. The second question does seem like a hook for McCain. It does not allow the voters who don’t like McCain a vote.

Jim,

Do you think Thompson is going to stay in the race?

If Fred supports McKennedy, he does not have conservative principles, period. There is nothing conservative about supporting the man who seriously considered running with John Kerry in 2004, four short years ago. Why would any genuine conservative ever vote for this man?

It doesn’t really matter.

If Mr. Thompson doesn’t get the nomination, none of the remaining candidates are palatable to me.

I might be willing to pull the lever in November for Mr. McCain, but it would be a painful event.

I’m unwilling to vote for Mr. “Never Met an Abortion I Didn’t Love” Giuliani, Mr. “Never Met a Lie I Wouldn’t Tell to Get Elected President” Romney, or Mr. “Never Met a Dirty Trick I Wouldn’t Pull to Get Elected President While Pretending to Be a Christian” Huckabee.

So, if Mr. Thompson were to drop out and endorse someone, what would I care one way or the other?

The remaining candidates are all dreck.

It would lessen my opinion of Thompson. McCain is so far off track Iconservatively (campaign finance, immigration, taxes, etc.), that I would rather see Thompson with Romney than McCain.

However, if it came down to McCain vs. Hillary or Obamaa, or Edwards...I would hold my nose and vote for McCain. I hope it does not come to that. In that case, Thompson would improve the ticket.

I hope Thompson somehow catches fire and starts moving up more and more in polls and in primaries (like with Florida hopefully)> That would be my druthers.

As the last standing conservative in the race? I certainly hope so. There has to be some hope left for America.

“It would lessen my opinion of Thompson.”

I don’t see how that wouldn’t be the near-universal opinion of conservatives.

“Who would you now support?”
I will not support any of the others.

“Also for Fred supporters only, if Fred endorses McCain, what impact would it have on your vote?”
No impact on my vote. It would, however, negatively impact my opinion of Fred. D. Thompson.

In light of current political trends: I am going to spend extra hours working (for black gun money) and reloading.

Probably hold my nose and vote for Romney, because he is a Mormon, and Mormons are afraid to screw up.

BTW, I am not a Mormon

My apologies for piling on with more questions... but, if FDT does drop out, and our 5 choices are Romney, Rudy, McCain, Huck, or Dems... don’t you agree that we should support Romney if only to stop the others?

I'll support the GOP nominee, but I'm not giving any more money to anybody, especially the RNC.
