Fred Out of Thursday's Debate; Doesn't Plan on Endorsing
National Review Campaign Spot Blog ^ | 1/22/08 | Jim Geraghty

Posted on 01/22/2008 7:36:38 AM PST by Callahan

I spoke to one of my Thompson sources.

He's still with his ailing mother. "He's just being a good son."

He has not spoken to any other campaign or any other candidates, nor does he intend to at this time.

He will not endorse, I am told by this source close to Thompson.

I am also told, "he has no interest in a vice presidency or a cabinet position." At an "appropriate time" he will outline his plans for the near future.

This source believes that the race has demonstrated that whatever happens from here on out, the GOP has to stand for consistent conservative policies across the board.

At one point, I asked this source if the attitude was, 'if you can't be Reagan, be Goldwater,' and the source responded, "exactly."

If I were a betting man, I would bet on him departing the race in the not-too-distant future.

"Someone who puts being with his 90 year old mom who he can't make better, ahead of the country, is making a bad judgement call, IMHO

I'm sorry but you have your priorities out of whack. He is right where he needs to be right now

Acording to bperiwinkle7 :

I called the Florida Fred Office about 30 minutes ago, and they told me that his mother is seriously ill, and he is with her, and that NONE of the candidates had rsvp’ed for the debate Thursday, and that there was talk that it may be post-poned....!!!!!1

If I can find this out with one call, what the heck is going on with the media and why are they purposely misinforming the public?

UNREAL and Nazi-like.....

“It’s not pessimism. It’s pragmatism. We will lose, even if we win. I’m not gonna go Pollyannish to please those who are too gullible that they buy into Romney’s conversion to conservativism.”

You know, what are you Romney haters going to do if Mitt gets the Presidency and then follows through on everything he has said as a candidate? What will your excuse for not having supported him be then? Inquiring minds want to know.

Unless her death is imminent (I haven't seen any story to that effect),

The first I have even heard of an "ailing" mother...only thing I heard is that he was just going to "visit"...another media blackout as the poster up thread speculated??...

Yes, they are. Especially the ones about 300+ jobs going to China so they can manufacture NICs with backdoors in them.

Don’t forget that right off the bat, Mitt is going to save the government 1.6 million by not taking a salary during his term as President.

If we had Fred or another principled conservative, I'd consider it a bargain to pay him 1.6 million MORE. That would be a fraction of what we'd save in spending and tax savings over his term.

We vote down here next Tuesday. It was Fred all the way for me, but I’ve decided I’m going to have to cast my vote for Mitt. He’s become my strong second and I don’t want McCain or Huckabee to get Florida’s delegates. It’s Winner Take All and the stakes are high!

Oh, that changes EVERYTHING! Romney was involved in the Olympics. I get it! Now I feel MUCH better about his pro-abortion, anti-2A, nanny-state policies and record.

Go Mitt!

Fred’s supporters support his devotion to his mother.
Only his detractors scorn him for it.
Conservative values embrace family ~ the cement of civilization and progress.

Why else are we fighting for Fred?

As a Florida resident, I just talked with the Florida office and they say they are sending names of supporters who have called up the ladder to HQ every few hours.

He said it was his understanding that details of the tremendous support out here on the blogs, emails and calls were reaching the Senator and senior aides.

We all need to calm down, continue praying for them and for our nation, and be prepared for an explosion of activity once we hear something official.

A decision to continue is something that they will have to weigh carefully and thoughtfully, and I’m prepared to give them time without demanding that they dance to my tune. :-)

Meanwhile, don’t pay attention to rumors scattered on the news and in blogs, based on unnamed “sources” because NO ONE — campaign “source” or not — really knows what is going to happen yet.

I wish Mary Matalin would come out
with just some news. Prayers for
Fred and his dear Mom.

As another freeper put it so well, if Fred drops out, in about 3 years we'll all have a collective V-8 Smack on the Head moment and exclaim "We could've had Fred Thompson!"

What is it with this forum lately about jumping on every rumor?

People pushing agendas I'd guess..

In his last speech, Fred said his mother was in the hospital and he was leaving SC to go there.

There has been no official release of information, but those in the campaign have said she has been “seriously” ill with pneumonia. She is over 90 years old, so being seriously ill with pneumonia is almost certainly life threatening.

“Since when is paying more tax than the law requires a sign of intelligence?”

I did not refer to the concept of paying less being illegal
in any way. I referred to the commercials that will be
easily run against Mitt because of his undeniable history.

He will be a Mitt Pinata! And when they’re done, candy will
be laying everywhere.

“That’s just good sense. If I had money and I wanted to avoid paying 40% of what I made in taxes, I might be looking into Cayman banks, too. And if a company is struggling, they might need to lay some people off to become profitable. Companies do not exist to give people jobs. They exist to PRODUCE goods and services. If they don’t do that efficiently, they DIE.”

You have a great argument, if you were talking about financial
planning. I was not. I was referring to the commercials that
will be used to hang Mitt out to dry.

Oh, yeah, I’m in the right place. It’s just Mitt is the wrong guy.
