Russian scientist says Earth could soon face new Ice Age
Russian News & Information Agency ^

ST. PETERSBURG, January 22 (RIA Novosti) - Temperatures on Earth have stabilized in the past decade, and the planet should brace itself for a new Ice Age rather than global warming, a Russian scientist said in an interview with RIA Novosti Tuesday.

"Russian and foreign research data confirm that global temperatures in 2007 were practically similar to those in 2006, and, in general, identical to 1998-2006 temperatures, which, basically, means that the Earth passed the peak of global warming in 1998-2005," said Khabibullo Abdusamatov, head of a space research lab at the Pulkovo observatory in St. Petersburg.

According to the scientist, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere has risen more than 4% in the past decade, but global warming has practically stopped. It confirms the theory of "solar" impact on changes in the Earth's climate, because the amount of solar energy reaching the planet has drastically decreased during the same period, the scientist said.

Had global temperatures directly responded to concentrations of "greenhouse" gases in the atmosphere, they would have risen by at least 0.1 Celsius in the past ten years, however, it never happened, he said.

"A year ago, many meteorologists predicted that higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would make the year 2007 the hottest in the last decade, but, fortunately, these predictions did not become reality," Abdusamatov said.

He also said that in 2008, global temperatures would drop slightly, rather than rise, due to unprecedentedly low solar radiation in the past 30 years, and would continue decreasing even if industrial emissions of carbon dioxide reach record levels.

By 2041, solar activity will reach its minimum according to a 200-year cycle, and a deep cooling period will hit the Earth approximately in 2055-2060. It will last for about 45-65 years, the scientist added.

"By the mid-21st century the planet will face another Little Ice Age, similar to the Maunder Minimum, because the amount of solar radiation hitting the Earth has been constantly decreasing since the 1990s and will reach its minimum approximately in 2041," he said.

The Maunder Minimum occurred between 1645 and 1715, when only about 50 spots appeared on the Sun, as opposed to the typical 40,000-50,000 spots.

It coincided with the middle and coldest part of the so called Little Ice Age, during which Europe and North America were subjected to bitterly cold winters.

"However, the thermal inertia of the world's oceans and seas will delay a 'deep cooling' of the planet, and the new Ice Age will begin sometime during 2055-2060, probably lasting for several decades," Abdusamatov said.

Therefore, the Earth must brace itself for a growing ice cap, rather than rising waters in global oceans caused by ice melting.

Mankind will face serious economic, social, and demographic consequences of the coming Ice Age because it will directly affect more than 80% of the earth's population, the scientist concluded.

The practical book says that a mini-ice age...like the one we had from the mid 1300s to the late 1700s...is more likely. If you study that period....summer garden periods barely lasted ten to twelve weeks. In Europe in the early 1600s....living up in the Finland and Norway region tested the best of men, and alot of families barely survived through each winter.

If I were to make a comparison....those who live in Tenn...would find themselves with mostly 75 to 85 degree temperatures for Jun, July, and Aug....none of that 90 degree stuff that they are currently used to. Winter temp’s would go down into the 15-30 degree range for at least two months out of the winter.

The bad news...you will burn lots of heat to keep the house warm, and you will find a very limited gardening period. Farmers in the midwest will still produce wheat and America will survive on...with some issues. This isn’t the end of life....its simply what our ancestors had to face...over and over. So you might want to get used to the idea and maybe over the next twenty years...you will find yourself in such a mini-glacier period.

Don't the Vulcans arrive in 2061? Maybe they'll help us.

Dude, the Myan calendar ends in 2012! We're not going to live to see the Vulcans land!

The coming ice age will be caused by globull warming, of course.

Notice how “globull warming” has morphed into “climate change”.

Going to be pretty hard to sell “carbon credits” now.

One is mindful of the “tulip and bulb craze” that seized Holland between 1634 and 1637. The bulbs had first been imported from Asia Minor in the late 16th Century, and were comparatively rare. The tulips were attacked by a specific mosaic infection, which caused some spectular color changes in the blooms. The showy blooms were widely sought after, causing a serious skew in the prices, a real market bubble.

At the peak of this craze, people were liquidating entire estates to make even small purchases of bulbs, and all the oxygen was sucked out of every other part of the market. When the crash came, it dragged down the entire economy of Holland, and an extended depression resulted.

The same thing is lying in wait for carbon credits, as the planet goes through one of ts cyclic cooling periods.

In fact, the current depression of stock prices might even be traced to the overinvestment in “green” technologies that do not recognize economic realities.

What we need to do is drill into those northern oil fields before the ice sheets bury them. Also buy more gas eating autos and cause more carbon emissions to warm up the atmosphere. Lot’s we can do to fight this coming cold.

“Don’t these patterns take hundreds, if not thousands, of years before they have any weight?”

Yes. But the pattern of the sun has been accepted, to a large degree.

Low output, low heat.

High output, high heat.

A scientist in Russia predicts an ice age? Shocking, isn’t it.

In any event, whatever the problem of the climate, be it too hot or too cold, international socialism is the only way to solve it.

Bring on the negative carbon tax!

That way you can trade off your carbon tax against your negative carbon tax and break even every time.

Of course, there will have to be an increase in general taxes to pay for the two new bureaucracies created to save us from the two different kinds of doom.

Global warming, global cooling. Either way, it's Government Growing.

why the hell have the socialist morons so fully embraced the lie

I was enlightened by a person who has done extensive research of the history of this stuff and have learned that the true powers doing this are the Zero Population Growth crowd and they own the socialists rather than the other way around. I have changed my focus somewhat since learning this. UN and World Bank need attention as the main arms of the ZPGers. Some of our other topics such as Sex Ed in grammar school also belong to these people. It might sound kind of Bilderburgerish, but consider it for a while and see.

“The bad news...”

We don’t want any bad news.

We want the weather to stay within our preset limits, for our convenience.

The government is promising to fix the weather.

Why should we have to ‘adapt’?

(/sarcasm)

I object.

I've been counting on things warming up for years...We need to demand that goreBore deliver what he promised!

But seriously, our grandkids will get caught in the worst of this - tho' the years from here to there will get increasingly cool - like the last Little Ice Age that drove the Vikings away from Greenland...and devastated Europe.

That said, it shouldn't be as devastating as the last Little Ice Age - we have/will have far better coping powers. Take food, for one example. The biggest reason for widespread starvation/crop failure was that they largely depended on above ground crops.

Indeed, like in France, many steadfastly refused to grow below ground crops like potatoes. King Louis of France tried to convince the starving minions to grow/eat potatoes by doing so himself. But they wouldn't - instead, they rioted - and you know the rest.

Forty years from now, many of us will be long gone, but with right planning NOW, new technologies, etc, our descendants can 'weather it' through...

I remember in the late 70’s, early 80’s that the “scientific community” was saying that increased levels of CO2 reflected solar radiation thereby cooling the planet. The solution...get rid of internal combustion engines, more mass transit, etc...are you surprised? Now we are told that increased CO2 results in higher temps but the “solution” is the same. This alone should make one wonder why opposite climate effects have the same answer. Socialists/Communists don’t want you to be able to travel freely without the heavy hand of government. The freedom to travel and relocate are anathema to the Left because it allows me more liberty.
