If that part about the court ordering only taxpayer funded abortions for medically needed abortions, it proves Romney a liar.

Once again.

“Romney exemplified true integrity when he apologized for his past abortion statements, and admitted he was wrong.

If he had refused to admit he was wrong, THAT’s when you should wonder if he had really changed.

But when someone admits to a past mistake, that shows the type of courage that is unusual for a politician.

That just one reason that many, like myself, are so enthusiastic about Mitt.

“I am certain he is genuine about his conservative beliefs,” Rush Limbaugh said this week.

Romney is a wholesome family man who truly exemplifies integrity, intelligence, and business saavy.”

EXACTLY!! I live in MA, and I know what Romney was up against here. His veto was useless, as the Dems infest this place. He had to do the best he could with what he had.

I am willing to accept a man who has seen the light. If the ARTL group can’t accept the fact that a man can come to his senses and realize what an abomination abortion is, then why do they bother with demonstrations etc.? They sound like radical Muslims.

If these people are going to let Hillary in because of their cut-off-your-nose-to-spite-your-face obstinancy, then they will get a Hillary or Obama, abortion enthusiasts who will absolutely do everything in their power to make abortion permanent by election whacko judges etc.

Sorry, but one issue voters look fairly ignorant to me. They are fanatics. I loathe abortion, but I will not let it put the likes of Hillary in office.

McCain is good on defense, but will offset that with his amnesty/open border mentality. Rudy: likewise. Huckabee: too religious and illegal immigrant friendly. The libs will chew him up and spit him out. The rest are too weak politically. So what’s left? Romney. A decent guy with good business sense, relatively strong anti illegal beliefs, and experience dealing with Northeast libs, the worst kind.

I am with Ann.

I'm sorry, but that sentence doesn't make sense to me.

However, the Mass. plan covers medically necessary services. It says so in the general plan information, and the restriction applies to all aspects of the plan except where explicitly stated otherwise.

There is no explicit statement exempting the abortion provisions from the general restriction to medically necessary services.

If you can point to a link showing the part of the plan that explicitly states that therapeutic abortions are covered, please post it. Nobody has ever been able to do so before.

I agree. Ann has been had by Flip. But then again, a lot of women have. I call it ERCD—Estrogen Related Cognitive Dissonance.

Ironically, Ann once wrote this: "I think [women] should be armed but should not [be allowed to] vote."

Now, she can use her support of Romney to back up her point!

CharlesWayneCT, seems like Romney is surely feeding you talking points, like the detailed excuses about the health plan, which I don’t believe for a minute.

The whole point on Romney is he “became pro-life” in 2004, and then went back on his word in 2005 and 2006! He’s only “pro-life” because he’s running for President.

Anyone who doubts the statements in the press release about how Romney’s “conversion” in 2004 was followed by several pro-abortion statements and actions, needs to go check those charges out. The detailed evidence is at the ARTL website — http://artlaction.com/release/20080116/right-life-leaders-battle-over-romney

Steve Curtis is a man of principle. As GOP chair in Colorado, refused to endorse the 1998 candidate for Governor (Bill Owens) because he believed he was a fake conservative, and didn’t believe his pro-life convictions (just like Romney). As Governor, Owens had a relatively conservative record, but showed his true colors as a tax-spend liberal as a lame duck (the Wall Street Journal had to “un-endorse” him for President, his switcheroo was so dramatic!).

And ARTL isn’t a fringe group. Some of the largest pro-life organizations in America are allied with them (though perhaps not as vocal against Romney) — American Life League, Operation Save America (formerly Operation Rescue), Human Life International, B1 Bob Dornan (mentioned by someone as a pro-life stalwart), etc. They’re actively challenging National Right to Life because NRTL supports pro-abortion candidates, so long as they’re Republicans (even against pro-life opponents!).

National Right to Life is also OPPOSED to establishing Personhood in law (the Human Life Amendement). That means they don’t believe in the RIGHT TO LIFE! Pro-lifers are fed up with them.

Steve Curtis takes an extreme pro-life position, one that is close to my own. It’s a position that virtuallly NONE of our candidates can meet. He thinks National Right to Life is pro-abortion.

But he only goes after Mitt Romney. There’s something more to his vitriol than just wanting to save babies.

Romney’s “conversion” was not a “road to Damascus” moment, it was a process that started with a conversation. Interestingly, that conversation was with a pro-abortion doctor. More interestingly, that doctor is used by ARTL to attack Romney.

Romney said that in the conversation, the Doctor noted that discarded embryos were killed after 14 days. Guess what — the pro-abortion doctor insists he would never use the term “killed” in reference to destroying embryos.

Of course he wouldn’t, just as abortion doctors don’t say “killed” to describe what they do to babies.

But Romney is correct, discarding the embryo IS killing it. And it’s rather offensive that a supposedly pro-life group is taking the side AND the terminology of the pro-abortion forces in order to attack a pro-life candidate because he’s not sufficiently pro-life for them, being as he doesn’t protect every embryo from the moment of fertilization.

Romney could do nothing to stop abortions, because of Roe. However, on every pro-life issue that he had any control over, he took a pro-life position. Often his position was overriden by the legislature. He stopped the destruction of embryos though.

Huckabee..decidedly pro-life but in every other way unacceptable...and his nomination will ensure a Hillary win

Look at the polls: Huckabee is doing better vs. the Clinton or Obama. Romney brings up the rear.

Also, people are looking for a champion of the people. Huckabee connects. Nobody knew him, before a few days ago. It's been a long time since anyone got so far with so few big-bucks donors (yet).

They’re actively challenging National Right to Life because NRTL supports pro-abortion candidates, so long as they’re Republicans (even against pro-life opponents!).

In our state, they backed a pro-life democrat against a much more pro-life republican. They don't simply back republicans. They make decisions, some of which I disagree with, with an eye on achieving the goal of overturning Roe, and stopping abortion. They actually do tend to favor INCUMBENTS, to try to give incentive to vote pro-life. The ATL action group has only existed since November of 2007, so nobody's been "associated" with them long enough to really count. And their web site has almost nothing except attacks on Romney. No attacks on ANY democratic presidential candidates. No attack on Rudy. No attack on Planned Parenthood, or NARAL. There is an attack on NRTL.

You've described Rudy, not Mitt. And your other viable choices are McCain, Hillary and Obama. Mitt is better than all of them on life. Mitt supports the HLA and opposes federal funding for ESCR (McCain supports federal funding for ESCR). He's also better than all of them on the gun issue as well.

McCain has a C+ from the NRA. Romney has a B from the NRA and Mitt's gun bill in Mass was endorsed by the NRA. All the other options are far worse on this issue (as well as many other issues!).

Questioned about gun control, McCain said existing laws should be enforced, noting that the Clinton Administration has been "derelict" in doing that. But he also said that he supported the recent gun control legislation passed by the Senate and he also said that in light of the recent spate of shootings, new proposals by the Clinton Administration should be looked at by Congress and not dismissed out of hand. http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/stories/1999/08/18/president.2000/thompson.mccain/

McCain flipped on guns
Senator McCain supported the interests of the Gun Owners of America 0 percent in 2005. (that's not good)
Senator McCain supported the interests of the Gun Owners of America 100 percent in 2006. (wow, what a convenient flip!)
Based on lifetime voting records on gun issues and the results of a questionnaire sent to all Congressional candidates in 2004, the National Rifle Association assigned Senator McCain a grade of C+ (with grades ranging from a high of A+ to a low of F).

well, if all of the pro abortion stuff is accurate about Romney, my vote will be going to Huckabee. He did raise some taxes but also had a large income tax cut. Even Reagan raised some taxes as governor. And the fairtax would be so great as a return to constitutional taxation. The founders never envisioned a tax on people’s paychecks. I love Huckabees courage to say that he would go directly to the people to get the fairtax passed. Reagan did that to get his tax cut package through congress.

I get the impression that to Mitt, being pro abortion or pro life is a policy decision and not a matter of life and death. Kind of like how many conservatives would be happy with either a flat tax or the Fair Tax.

“Sorry, but one issue voters look fairly ignorant to me. They are fanatics. I loathe abortion, but I will not let it put the likes of Hillary in office.”

I got off of another thread because all of the Mitt-haters had congregated on it. So I switch to this thread, thinking its about Ann Coulter, and it turns out to be yet another hate-Romney thread. Sheesh, that’s all I see now everyday on FR, a variety of hate-Mitt threads. Not a good thing, especially to those new to FR. And now a bogus article by a bogus hit group set up to attack Romney on abortion. A group that’s only been in existence for a few months and that has as its express purpose going after Mitt. I’d love to know who’s behind it. Evangelicals I suspect, probably Huckster backed. Thanks John McCain for Campaign Finance Reform that brought us the joys of 527 hitmen. You have ruined our country’s campaign process.

Those new to FR would do well to read the Statement By Our Founder located on the main page. They may as well learn now what kind of site this is, so that after years of posting stupid crap they won’t be lamenting the loss of the liberal playground they thought they’d found.

“It’s a toss up between McCain and Giuliani. Can’t decide which is at the bottom of my list. First one, then the other.”

My perspective is that a Giuliani nomination would mean the final, irreversible destruction of anything resembling the Reagan coalition, whereas the worst result of a McCain nomination would probably “only” be another socialist Democrat presidency, like the one Bob Dole ensured in 1996.

But strictly for pragmatic purposes, you’re welcome to leave McCain at the bottom of the list right now.

ARTL is trying to achieve goals, a step at a time. Romney is a fake pro-lifer who many pro-lifers think is for real. He’s not. And he’s been the front-runner up to now (may still be, as of next week). Naturally, Romney is the target since attacks against the other candidates wouldn’t produce the same effect. Everybody knows Giuliani, Clinton, Obama, etc. are pro-abortion. Pro-lifers dont’ know this about Romney, so they’re spreading the word.

Later, they may go after other candidates, holding their feet to the fire. Right now, they’re trying to keep principled pro-lifers from making a HUGE mistake.

In an ABC interview, Steve Curtis said that he doesn’t like any of the front runners, specifically mentioning Huckabee, who’s a liberal. He did say he would prefer Alan Keyes (who is still running). That’s not why they’re running these ads.

NRTL has been suborned by the GOP. The RNC pays up to $500,000 a year to National Right to Life, to buy their loyalty, so they’ll do things to benefit the party.

NRTL’s “big” accomplishment of the last 15 years? Ending abortion in a state? No. Encouraging Personhood Amendments? No! (they’ve actively opposed Human Life Amendments at the federal and state level) Ending Partial Birth Abortion? No — the PBA Ban was a paper tiger meant to give cover to pro-choice Republicans who could claim to “support the right to choose, but I’m for the PBA Ban”.

NRTL, the GOP, Jay Sekulow, etc. all say the PBA Ban is a great victory, because for 15 years they’ve been selling that snake oil, and they have to act like it’s a victory or they’ll be shown for what they are. In reality, it doesn’t save a single life, it’s still possible under the carefully-written GOP law to deliver a baby half-way and suck its brains out, the PBA ruling recommends injection abortions as a good alternative too. The PBA Ban Ruling is more “pro-abortion-rights” than Roe v. Wade was, and yet the GOP claims it as a victory so they can win elections on it.

The GOP has sold out to the left, and NRTL has sold out to the GOP — they all support the same things, none of it related to the Right to Life.

American Right to Life is the principled pro-life organization that will take the place of NRTL as a real fighter for the Right to Life.
