Los Angeles -- GOP presidential candidate John McCain's meteoric rise to front-runner status has made him target of new Internet attacks from his political opponents, but he said Thursday that "I'm not going to waste my time" responding to those bent on reviving some of his past controversies in an attempt to stop his momentum.
McCain, in an interview with The Chronicle on Thursday, reacted to the latest attack - a Drudge Report post Thursday of a Chronicle column published in 2000. The column, by writer C.W. Nevius, quoted the Arizona senator, who was tortured during five years in solitary confinement in Vietnam, as saying, "I hate the gooks. ... I will hate them as long as I live."
The post of the 8-year-old story on Drudge affected The Chronicle's online site, SFGate.com, at one point creating more than 500 downloads a minute, prompting administrators to employ special procedures to make sure the site wouldn't crash. The story first appeared on the Digg social networking site, was then moved to Digg's front page, and was picked up by Drudge. It showed up on the Gate's most-read list even though it was not republished on the Gate home page.
"I'm not going to waste my time," said a visibly tense McCain, when reminded of his quotes in the column. "You can say what you want. I'm proud of my record, my service with my comrades. And if anyone has any criticism of that, I can only say I stand on my record and my Silver Star, my three Bronze Stars and my Distinguished Flying Cross."
"And I'd be glad to send them," he added, "the citation for the Silver Star I received ... and for my conduct in prison. And the comments of my senior ranking officer, Bud Day," he said...

He’s not my candidate, and there are more than enough reasons to dislike him as a politician, including his attack on the First Amendment. But don’t go playing anti-military, Fred Phelps wannabe on a war hero. FReepers should know better.
McCain has the liberty to have said whatever he wanted about his former captors.
He was born into a family of Admirals.
During training, he ditched two planes, but was still allowed to pass. Normally one plane is enough to get dumped.
Again, sorry if facts offend you - he said what he said, and that fact can not be denied.
Another inconvenient truth for Juan McAmnesty: Juan Hernandez.
The pejorative term “Gooks” has but one connotation: NVC, North Viet Cong Commies... aka “Charlie”
>>>McCain, as a politician, has been a huge disappointment, but he is a genuine war hero, and for that, I salute him.<<<
Benedict Arnold was a genuine war hero. He was also a traitor, as is McCain.
I was quoting Thomas Sowell, in an article that was posted here, tonight. Thomas Sowell doesn’t like McCain, either and he was the one who compared McCain to Benedict Arnold.
Good analogy.
The term predates the Vietnam war by decades.
Is John McCain a war hero ?Served US Army 1958 - 1964 E5 SP-5
I was aware of those things. I was just curious what gallant action he undertook to get a DFC.
I once heard john Kerry got three purple hearts and never missed a days work. Not even one single day. I bet McCain cant top that unless he actually got the DFC for wrecking two jets.
I think you said that pretty well.
That is news to me... Never heard it used in any other context except Vietnam... but then I’m only 47.
Juan McAmnesty was a POW like Kerry was in Nam.
_______________
To even compare the two—you have no clue. None.
McCain is hiding behind his uniform....and a whole lot of people are more than willing to let him get away with it.
I don’t care if he struck out against those who fought against him in Vietnam. At least he’s being honest about that....which would be a first for him, lately.
“The Gooks are economic allies of the United States, and I would prefer to see us send manufactuing business to VietNam than to China.”
They are. And I have a feeling this will send rumbles through California, which has a pretty freaking massiave Asian population.
I think I’ve got McCain figured out... He is a “south paw” ... he writes left handed... That explains why he always leans to the left... It is his dominant side ;)

Even if it’s true, he’s earned the right to say it. He gets a pass from me.
