Suspect in rape at library was freed sex offender

NEW BEDFORD - A convicted sex offender arrested this week on charges of raping a 6-year-old boy in the public library had been released from prison a year ago, despite the strenuous objections of the district attorney and three psychologists who argued that he posed a serious threat to children.

Superior Court Judge Richard Moses denied the prosecutor's motion to keep Corey Saunders in custody indefinitely, arguing that he had a low IQ and had suffered physical and sexual abuse as a child.

The judge said Saunders, who was sentenced to four years for the attempted rape of a 7-year-old boy in 1999, had not committed any major sexual offense while he was in prison. Moses released Saunders, ruling that he was not dangerous.

Later, Saunders was classified as a Level 3 sex offender, the most dangerous category considered likely to reoffend. Level 3 offenders are required to register with local police, and their photos are posted on a state website....

Near the end of his ruling, Moses wrote, "Saunders will be required to register as a sex offender, and the public will be provided with the protections afforded by such statute."

I'm posting this story for one reason only - to expose the reasoning of this "judge" who uses low IQ and childhood deprivation to support an argument that this obviously dangerous person should not be detained.

These two facts about this criminal - that he is stupid and that he has had a hard life - have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with the issue in front of the "judge", which is, does he meet the criteria of the law for detention.

How many judges like this are there on the bench? What sort of executives appoint them? And how can they be removed?

By the way, this is an excerpt - the main body says he was appointed by Jane Swift (R) before Mitt was in office, in case you were wondering.

Seems pretty obvious to me that statute did nothing to protect this child.

Part of the judge’s ruling was based on the fact that “had not committed any major sexual offense while he was in prison”. What bogus reasoning!!!! Of course he didn’t offend in prison, those aren’t ‘his type’.

This judge has clearly shown to be just to stupid to be a judge. In fact, with that sort of mental problem I’m not sure just what job he would be qualified to hold.

What's so striking about this case are the "reasons" the judge gave for unleashing this monster.

I'm quite sure there is nothing in Massachusetts law which allows early release for being stupid, or for having a bad childhood.

If anything, those would be reasons to be detained longer.

So in addition to being foolish and dangerous, the judge is lawless.

Something is going to have to be done eventually about lawless judges.

I’ve always thought the Sex Offender registry was a stupid idea. Level 3 sex offenders shouldn’t be out of prison if they are still dangerous...thus no need for the registry. I also have learned of Level 3 Sex Offender in Massachusetts who has recently won a big prize in the Mass State Lottery. News around here hasn’t picked on that one yet other than a few comments on a local newspaper Internet comment board.

I know he's a persona non grata around FR, for good reason, but the only person I can see who is doing something about judges now is Bill O'Reilly. He exposes stupid decisions like this, has his crew follow and question judges who make bonehead decisions, and bawls them out on the air. It's very refreshing. For all his superficial "research" on some topics, you have to hand it to Bill for his rabid attacks on child molesters and their enablers, like this judge.

As much as I hate the "Sue" mentality of this nation, it is only with this type of action that judges will start protecting CITIZENS, instead of CRIMINALS.
