LITTLE ROCK, Ark., Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Actor Roy Scheider, the star of such films as "Jaws" and "All That Jazz," died Sunday at 75 in Little Rock, Ark., his wife told The New York Times.

Scheider, who lived in Sag Harbor, N.Y., died of complications from a staph infection, Brenda Scheider told the newspaper. Scheider had suffered from multiple myeloma.

Scheider came to prominence in such '70s films as "Klute" and "The French Connection" -- for which he earned an Oscar nomination as Buddy Russo, the partner of police Detective Popeye Doyle, played by Gene Hackman.

Scheider may have been best known as the resort town police chief in the 1975 blockbuster "Jaws."

Scheider was born in 1932 in Orange, N.J. He earned a history degree from Franklin and Marshall College and then served three years in the U.S. Air Force

I’m not one who remembers much about the movies I’ve seen, but All That Jazz is one of my absolute favorites.

Joe Gideon: No, nothing I ever do is good enough. Not beautiful enough, it’s not funny enough, it’s not deep enough, it’s not anything enough. Now, when I see a rose, that’s perfect. I mean, that’s perfect. I want to look up to God and say, “How the hell did you do that? And why the hell can’t I do that?”

RIP Joe

Jaws was one of the best movies ever made IMO. I was only in the 3rd grade when I saw it. I didn’t even want to take a bath after that.

Interesting how when I saw the title of the thread, the first movie he starred in that popped into my head was "All That Jazz." That movie really left an impression on me... I think that maybe it was Sandahl Bergman in the "Air-Otica" dance number...

I wrote an obituary for him in my blog, and included an amusing anecdote about him that my brother shared with me. Here's a link:

. . .So what if he protested? Are we going to create a NIXONIAN enemies list against anyone who disagrees with that policy? You can be a really good conservative and disagree with spending billions of dollars and lives on Iraq. It was a military option, among many. It ought not to be above or beyond disagreement. And to demonize and “hate” those who disagreed is juvenile at best.

Sorry but Schieder was well known locally for shutting down Montauk Highway in East Hampton (the only way in or out) by staging anti-war die-ins where he and others lay across the road.

As with anyone, what he did for a living did not define who he was. If you want to give him a pass because you saw him in a few movies then you should give the same leeway to the bubble-headed Starbucks 'barrista' who pulls the same stunt.

If I give him ‘a pass’, it has nothing to do with films.

And is to do with the fact that the man served his country.

“You’re gonna need a bigger boat!”

One of the greatest scenese in any movie. When he saw that shark and backed into the wheelhouse with his cigarette dangling from his lip...fantastic.
