Mayor Michael Bloomberg took his fight against illegal guns outside the state again Wednesday, introducing a new intiative in Baltimore aimed at curbing gun trafficking along I-95.
Joined by Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon and his bi-partisan coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the mayor announced the creation of a database that will allow 11 East Coast cities to share information about gun runners.
"Mayor Dixon and I are committed to building a regional system to track illegal guns, said Bloomberg. Many others will have the chance to tap into this database and to contribute to it and this is exactly what the federal government should be building for cities, but since they dont seem to be doing it, we are doing it on our own."
I-95 has been called the "Iron Pipeline," because it is a common route used to smuggle guns from southern states with more relaxed gun laws into cities further up the coast.
While New York has seen a sharp drop in the murder rate, Baltimore's rate last year reached its highest since 1999.
Mayor Dixon says she looks to New York City to get her illegal gun effort off the ground.
He's still sounding like a candidate for the White House.
Put signs along the eastbound lane of the George Washington Bridge announcing: “PREPARE TO STOP AHEAD FOR WEAPONS SEARCH.” The gun runners would then throw the guns into the river before they got to the other side.

If he wants to get involved in Virginia he should pay taxes first.
Amen! New Yorkers should replace this bonehead, but they haven’t got the guts.
Baltimore and Maryland have very strict gun laws.
By whom?
It's ironic (ahem) that the areas with lax gun laws enjoy lower crime, and the the stricter areas higher crime. Then you have this trafficking problem, which is osmotic in nature.
These wonks could easily solve the "illegal" gun trafficking problem by easing restrictions in places like NYC, so that smuggling wouldn't be necessary. Problem solved!
Why won’t this POS stop?
I’d also ask to join the ping list, but reading about Bloomberg makes me sick, so I’ll decline.
Not really. Just can’t carry, and you’ve got to wait to get your handguns. Not that those laws really mean anything to a lot of people in Baltimore and Prince George’s County.
Thanks for the ping!
LoL!
You can get anything in NYC ~ you can trade any commodity for any other commodity. Wiping out I-95 will not change that.
He’s breathing.
If only these people who “go after illegal guns” were even half as passionate about going after illegal aliens, this nation would be a sight better off.
