Health officials in the Chinese city of Chongqing are urging people to report their family members to the authorities if they violate a smoking ban. The initiative is part of a campaign in two districts of the city to tackle the effects of passive smoking. Those who are accused of smoking will have their names posted on a warning list on community notice boards. As well as the campaign within families, a workplace smoking ban is also being tried in public buildings.
A hospital boss whose organisation is taking part in the trial said he would cut the bonuses of any team where members were found to have smoked. Cigarettes are hugely popular in China, which is estimated to have a total of 350 million smokers. The World Health Organization has estimated that 3,000 people die in China each day from the effects of smoking. |
And here we thought China was so much different than the U.S....
Time for their citizens to buy flame throwers to light their Camels......
No we’re not. We’re closer than people think. I quit smoking but it was my idea....not my governments.

Piffle.
China probably aborts that many babies per day. So what’s the big deal?
Stupid communists - it’s the nicotine that’s keeping 350 million Chinese working and paying for their workers’ paradise.
Better leave their smokes alone or all hell will break loose.
LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!
Years back Califonia stuck a $0.25 cent tax on each cigarette pack sold, in order to have funding to ‘inform the public’ regarding the dangers of cigarette smoke.
Now they’re spending the money to demonize appartment dwellers who smoke.
You couldn’t make this stuff up...
Wow! That's a lot of dying. My friend who went there recently said people greet one another with a cigarette instead of a handshake - strange. I'll bet a lot of those 'smoking deaths' stem from the rampant pollution and the chemicals in the food and air, more than just the cigarettes.
PING.
Hey, it’s just the commie-totalitarian-fascist way.
Where’s the usual suspects? I’ll wager this’ll hit too close to home for them, lol.
I’ve been there... 350 million must be the goal, not the current number.
The ones that aren’t smoking can’t afford to keep a lit cigarette in their mouths every waking moment.
Good. A nasty habit whose adherents barely deserve legitimacy. Nice thing about a totalitarian system is that something like this can be rather effective. Like when Iran and NorthKorea banned smoking in the past couple of years. Instant acceptance of the new rules. And nice, that, we could have a rabid nonsmoking mullah meet an Iranian mullah on common ground. Say in NYC.
America has made a lot of headway in demonizing smoking; there are still some holdout states, some partial bans in bars in some places, but if we start taking a page out of the Chinese method, we could get rid of those too.
We are almost on par with the Chinese; we’ve got regulation concerning tobacco use in private domiciles; rented mainly for now, but shouldn’t be too much of a stretch to get the law to apply to property owned by a smoker.
mmnnnn....you forgot your sarcasm tag. You were being sarcastic...right? It’s getting hard to tell on FR anymore where smokers are concerned.
Sarcasm, irony and satire are sooooooo 20th Century, don’t you think.
If the cause is righteous enough, as wiping out the scourge of tabak rightly is, “minor” transgression of individual rights, the negation of the right to assembly with like minded individuals, the elevation of the dubious science behind the Jihad onto a sacred pedestal - all these are amply justified by the greater good achieved in the ideal of the health and public welfare.
And it also helps the cause of global peace; what else could North Korean Communists, Iranian theocrats, Sunni jihadis, Western Liberals and Conservatives all agree upon. The evil of smoking.
If we start small with the things we agree on, then we can find more common areas of agreement, say banning alcohol.
So, in conclusion, if you smoke or support the “right” of smokers to indulge in their ghastly habit, then you may well be against World Peace.
I guess you weren’t being sarcastic. You’re insane instead.

Dark, swarthy has a sicker sense of humor than me. Don’t take him so seriously.
Well, we’ve already adopted the tactics of totalitarian states in the War on Drugs, so why not in the War on Tabacoo, too? Because the WoD has been such a rousing success, right? Why, we’ll win it any day now.
The War on Drugs is great. Put everyone in jail. That will just clear the highways and roads and reduce traffic.
I personally benefit. Less congestion, less traffic.
The Party says smoking is bad for your health. Quit smoking or we will shoot you.
