Jon Stewart's Oscar monologue
National Post ^ | February 24, 2008 | Jon Stewart

... Oscar is 80 this year, which makes him now automatically the frontrunner for the Republican nomination. You have to admit, this is a huge election. An historic election. So much excitement. For the first time in so many years we don’t have an incumbent president or an incumbent vice-president. The field is wide open. Have you all had a chance to examine all the candidates, study their positions and pick the Democrat you’ll vote for? Democrats do have an historic race going. Hillary Clinton vs Barack Obama. Normally, when you see a black man or a woman president an asteroid is about to hit the Statue of Liberty. How will we know it’s the future? Silver unitards, that can’t be all? You have to give Barack Obama credit, he’s overcome a great deal. Not just he’s an African-American. Barack Hussein Obama is his name. His middle name is the last name of Iraq’s former tyrant. His last name rhymes with Osama. That’s not easy to overcome. I think we all remember the ill fated 1944 presidential campaign of Gaydolf Titler. It’s just a shame, Titler had so many good ideas. We just couldn’t get past the name. And the moustache. But, are you ready to have a wonderful show ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to this town? I’m delighted that you’re here. We’re going to have a great night.

There’s good political humor and there’s nasty political humor.

I remember HBO’s Not Necessarily the News and boy were their Reagan jibes hilarious! I could imagine the Gipper himself chuckling.

Their house specialty was splicing actual news footage with their antics in a seamless fashion. One that had me in stitches was this diplomatic pow-wow which had Reagan receive the guests at the door to this house where the event was being held. It was at night and the NnTN editors had ominous music and thunder dubbed in. Reagan would receive each guest then shut the door. NnTN then dubbed in a horrible shriek each time. Implying that he had killed them, etc. It was an absolute scream.

Sure do. Hilarious movie, and a unique one, to boot.

I liked Nixon but always thought Saturday Night Live’s Nixon sketches were hilarious. They were well thought out and witty.

Now they just basically say “Bush sucks. Aren’t we the funniest thing you’ve ever heard for saying that?” No, you’re not even close.

Yep. Even up to the '90s, political humor was actually funny. Do you remember that great SNL skit with Phil Hartman playing Reagan? Befuddled, gentle soul in public (like meeting Girl Scouts), then Decisive, Brutal Man of Action when the doors were closed!

It's really only since the '60s hippies emerged from their rocks in the early '00s that political humor has been saddled with a totalitarian Leftist fascism that is anything but funny.

SNL had a pretty funny opening sketch on CNN’s debate with the Obama worship.

Make that a trifecta for the Coen bros- picture, directors, and producers. Guess I gotta go see the movie now.

Raising Arizona is in my top 5 comedies of all time. I still laugh myself silly at the chase scene with the clerk, dogs, cop, other clerk, etc., etc., etc.

the reason the Bush stuff isn’t funny is because it’s just not true. Everytime I hear a lib say how dumb Bush is, I always reply...well, he always outsmarts your guys...that’s not something I’d want on MY resume!

He knows the Hollywood audience. I'm not impressed by his partisanship.

I can't watch these things anymore. There was a time a Freeper would convened a live thread. Those were fun.

Personally, I think it was one of the best Oscar shows I can remember. I was pleasantly surprised that Stewart actually didn’t really do any republican-bashing, and the making fun of the Democratic race bit was amazing.
