Specter irked by uncooperative Pats, league in Spygate probe
ESPN.com ^ | 2/22/08 | Mike Fish

Frustrated at the obstacles confronting his investigation of "Spygate," Sen. Arlen Specter accused the New England Patriots of "stonewalling" on Friday and suggested the NFL might never get around to questioning key witness Matt Walsh, a former Patriots video assistant.

Specter's comments are in stark contrast to remarks on Wednesday from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who told reporters that the NFL was moving toward an agreement that would allow Walsh to tell what he knows about the Patriots' spying practices without fear of being sued.

I believe sincerely the NFL wants this story over because they know that it’s not just the Patriots.

Doesn't Arlen know that this will be unproven by Scottish law standards?

Doesn't this self important coot have some real business to attend to somewhere else in the world?

Hard to believe this man stayed as senator in Pa. and they threw Santorum out.

I just want to know which constitutionally enumerated power allows a United States senator to stick his nose into the business of a football league?

Arly Spectator will go down in history as being an idiot that wants to get his big nose in everybody’s business with the exception of the constitutional business he was elected to.

A typical lifelong RINO who does not have enough intellect to jumpstart a moron.

Get rid of him

I guess the NFL’s business is more important than illegal immigration, the economy, getting conservatives elected, de-funding berkley, yep prosecuting MLB and NFL players and franchises is another great way to get your picture on TV and waste tax payers hard earned dollars

“Arlen will go down in the history books”....As an idiot. This guy has entirely too much time on his hands.

I have been a Pats fan for 30 years...some bad ones.

Their image is so tarnished right now, only Congress can save them...and they are trying. Thanks.

Maybe he should revisit the Warren Commission report. That document hasn’t exactly aged well.

Put Specter aside for a minute and look at what’s going on with Roger Goodell and the NFL. Specter is just the person stirring the pot. What we are seeing is the scum of the NFL rising to the top. It takes somebody to step in the kitchen and hit the lights before the coackroaches start scurrying for the cracks.

As a football fan, I’m more than happy to see somebody... ANYBODY step in and do something to bring some integrity back to the sport.

As to the penalty, Pats fined total $750,000. In Formula 1 racing, Team McLaren was fined $100 million for stealing information from Team Ferrari. There’s a cover up going on, all right.

It sounds to me like this is a case in controversy, jurisdiction over which is reserved to the Courts. Hey Arlen, how are things going with your day job?

Really. C’mon for crying out loud, he’s a freaking SENATOR. We have a war in Iraq, illegal alien hordes invading our country, etc., etc., and he’s upset that the Patriots beat the Eagles 4 years ago. WAAAAAAA. Well I’m upset that they beat the Cowboys last year, but I’m not screaming for a federal investigation.

If only these guys met once every 2 years like the Texas legislature. He looks so foolish. And we watch football as a distraction from crap and people like him. Don’t need no stinkin politics in football

You're probably right, seems like everyone is in cahoots...but I still say because everybody does it doesn't make it right. From the article:

Specter explained: "To get a concession from the commissioner that it goes back to the year 2000. To get a concession that they had notes. Originally, we were only told about videos, and they only went back a half-dozen games in '06. Originally, we weren't told that the notes included the [Pittsburgh] Steelers."

Specter said he is aware of what appears to be a united league-wide front supporting Goodell's handling of the taping controversy. That support was echoed Thursday at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis by members of the league's powerful Competition Committee, who told reporters they believe the issue should be put to rest.

"Well, I don't want to pick a fight with everybody in the world, like all the owners," Specter said. "But they are functioning from talking points -- 'We're satisfied with the investigation.' 'Oh yes, the penalty was sufficient.' 'Oh, let's put this behind us.' 'Let's move on.'

"You have heard everyone say the same thing."

Gee Arlen, let the courts sort it out and do something useful (or better yet, do nothing harmful).

Impeach professional athletes. They are a menace to this great nation of ours. They dope up on Human Growth Hormone and studying the moves of the opposition.

Protect Hollyweird from investigations into consmetic surgery and rehashing other peoples’ work.

I would like to thank Congress and most especially the Senate, and in particular Arlen Specter, for making this nation a country that has so few problems that we have go after the internal workings of a sports league in order to find any worthy of our attention. No threats from terrorism. No threats from illegal immigration. No threats from government corruption. No threats from foreign sources. No problems with energy or the environment. No problems with taxes. They have truly done an outstanding job!.............
