Gunshots bring abrupt end to frantic 911 call

WEST COVINA, California (AP) -- A woman was asking a 911 dispatcher for help when her pleas were interrupted by gunshots, then silence.

She was shot to death.

The woman told the dispatcher someone was trying to break into her home in upscale West Covina, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Dan Rosenberg said.

"Deputies heard gunshots followed by silence and an open phone line," he said.

Deputies arrived at the house, 20 miles east of Los Angeles, a few minutes after Wednesday's late morning call.

The woman, whose name was not released by police, had been shot several times. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

"At this point we believe it was a burglary gone awry," Rosenberg said.

Investigators are trying to determine if anything was taken, Deputy Luis Castro said.

While police were investigating the shooting, a man arrived at the home asking about his wife.

When he heard that the woman had been shot and killed, he collapsed and started to cry, saying "No! She just called me. You lie."

The man was placed in a patrol car and taken to a sheriff's station, police said.

Witnesses said they saw one or more men running from the house, Rosenberg said. Investigators used bloodhounds to conduct yard-to-yard searches.

No arrests had been made by Thursday morning, deputies said.

As a precaution during the search, a high school and an elementary school were locked down for about two hours, police Lt. Dan Brooks said.

However, they never fail to bring a Hazmat team to clean up your blood.

Personally I am of the opinion that it is better that they be cleaning the perps brain matter off my floor then mine, but I am silly that way.

Prayers for the 911 com center workers. Nothing worse than the feeling of absolute helplessness and inability to intervene.

woodbutcher said: "NEVER pull a weapon or fire a shot unless you are going to shoot to kill."

Justified self-defense only permits one to shoot in order to stop the attack. It's simply a coincidence of human physiology that the same tactic that will stop an attack quickly is also extremely deadly.

When the attack stops, you must stop shooting, whether the attacker is dead or alive. You are only shooting to STOP, not shooting to KILL.

The liberal says, “This is why we should have gun control.”

The conservative says, “This is why we should have guns.”

“A fella that lives down the street had a break-in years ago. He blew off both the robber’s hands with a shotgun when he tried to attack with a bat.”

I love stories with a happy ending.

There's no cop leaning aginst the wall next to my door ... but a loaded 12 guage is.

There's no cop on my 'puter desk .. but a loaded .22 is.

There's no cop in my bedroom .. but a loaded AK74 is (no, not 47).

My of age daughters carry and my 14 yo son is ... um .... reliable.

Sad to read THIS report. The one, of all, you never want to hear about.

This article should be required reading by every member of the SCOTUS.

AND a copy of the 911 tape to listen to while they deliberate.

I'd love to hear some pro-2nd lawyer would stand before the Supremes and, instead of arguing, just play the tape. Devastating.

“At this point we believe it was a burglary gone awry,”

That’s a lot like “a drug deal that went bad.”

You do what you want to do and I’ll do what I want to do...
Two in the chest/body; the third to the head. I want the SOB dead, if he/she is still twitching...

A real tragedy in upscale Covina Hills. The MO for this crime is as interesting as the poor victims last name....Hsu. Probably no connection to Norman Hsu..?

Good thing she didn’t have a gun; She might have hurt herself.

Or the burglars might have taken it away from her and shot her with it.

Yeh You are right about shooting a gun w/ intent to kill. I have a handgun but I never did any formal training with it. Education is key when dealing w/ a deadly weapon. Thanks for the education that I need more of it.

Shoot to end the threat. If a BG dies after being ventilated, tough break.

How sad. What are the odds that the shooter is an illegal alien?

I want the SOB dead,..

Of course you do.

But that's not the story to tell the police.

I would say being shot to death is a little worse.

LOL

My wife has had to call the cops a couple of times for prowlers in yard, etc.

She always ends with “My husband is the bald man with the 45”
