Just installed a quick change to the pings page. It brings it more in line with what it is expected to look like. One particular change is the "greening" of comments from you, to more easily differentiate something you've posted vs. something posted to you. Not so sure about the way that looks, so please give me feedback.
With this update the tabs on the pings page get memory: the page will remember the last tab you have selected. This tab memory will be extended across the board. I'm currently reworking the 'tag' index pages to accommodate this.
I'm also trying something new with regard to time. We will try using your computer's clock to set the time zone. This uses JavaScript, if you don't have JavaScript enabled you'll see "04/08/2008 2:31:48 AM PDT" (etc), but if you do you'll probably see something more like "Tuesday, April 08, 2008 5:31:48 AM" [for an eastern time zone.] I'm leaving it up to your computer to format the time stamp, so your experience may vary. These new time stamps will be extended across the board as I update the hundreds of locations where the time is displayed.
The very next update (probably a day or two away) will stomp out the last of the "More" bugs, enhance the search function, and quite possibly extend the 'manage blocks' page with new blocks and a better interface to select them.
In future updates we'll have the ability to add multiple pages to our profiles. And each page will be versioned-- you'll be able to restore previous versions of a page should something go horribly, horribly wrong. This is actually a precursor to a larger project, which will allow multiple people to collaborate on website projects. Think of a profile page on steroids, complete with custom sidebars, an upload area (images, possibly sound clips) and whatnot.
On the less visible side of things, I will be consolidating the internals quite a bit... we've managed to gather similar functionality across a large number of programs. I'd very much like to tidy that up. For example, there are 4 or 5 different 'thread programs' used on the site, each with their own posting programs, etc (example: the state boards.) It would make my day if I could bundle up all these distinct functions into one place. The presentation-- how you will see things-- may be different for each type of thread, but the underlying data structures and logic (and routines like spell check) will be consolidated. This will be a huge change to the internals (if only because I'll be fiddling with 50+ million comments in our database.) Once that is implemented we'll have editable comments and articles.
Anyway, somebody shut me up, I'm rambling now.
Currently have the new index code (aka Latest Posts) installed. Tabs have memory, next time you visit you'll see the last tab you had visited. Additionally, each tab on the index page remembers its brevity setting. So you can have articles with text, and activity and comments with headers only, if that is what you prefer.
I moved the "RSS" link and sidebar control (now called "Add to My Page") down to the bottom of the page. Just really didn't need to take up precious top real-estate for those things.
Currently "Add to My Page" is non-functional, you'll get the manage blocks page but the current listing will not be added as a block. And some of the "More" links are still bugged. Those are the next tasks.
Use the Home key on your keyboard.
Most of us agree.
But midi.....now there's a thought!
I’d sure like to see a “softer” background color. The white background can make you go blind or at least see spots. Please get rid of the white background. Maybe beige or light blue with Navy text. Maybe even black with white text.
I saw a reference to Safari on this thread so decided to check it out, at least online. The Safari for Windows website had user reviews that rated it none too well, so I read a few. The biggest problem I saw was its use of system resources. Also, one reviewer noted Opera ran as fast with fewer resources.
I decided ‘thanks but no thanks’.
I like the white background, keep it - it makes reading text easier!
Oh, please no. I hate black websites.
You might try increasing your font size to see if that helps on a white background...
Thanks for all you do!
Is there any way to get all articles (and replies, and pings) to open up in a separate window? I have that set as a “preference”, however right now the ones that open in separate windows automatically are the main articles (not the sidebars, not the replies, not the pings).
I noticed the Greening. It is AWESOME. One thing though. The “new posts to you” red letters are always there even when there aren’t any new ones.
Font size is 14 now. Don’t need it bigger than that. :-)
Black background with white text is easiest on the eyes but a softer color than white would be acceptable. White is too harsh for anyone’s eyes. A monitor is, in essence, a flourescent light. It’s like staring into a flourescent light for hours. When I walk away from the computer I have to let my eyes “adjust” as if I have just come inside on a sunny day. Before you ask, yes, this room is well-lighted. :-)
This is as close as you'll get ;-)
(Thank you, easonc52)
Even I think marquee is most evil. YUCK!
I see.
I do like being able to enlarge text etc. without having it disappear off the window.
Thx.
I prefer the white too. But having a pale blue background as AN OPTION would be reasonable, to me.
I’m virtually a fanatic for LOTS of OPTIONS.
Not questioning anything, just anti-black backgrounds on websites. I have no problem with soft colored backgrounds, only black requires bold type for it to be easily read. 'Normal' text doesn't stand out well.
25 years in printing scan documents tells me one needs good contrast for readability. White over black may be 'easy' on the eyes, but it lacks good contrast. Perhaps a pastel would be a better alternative.
But, have you had your eyes tested lately? Just a thought... :)
I hate black websites, too.
But can’t we change background colors on our own screens via IE7 settings? I think so.
Get into IE7’s settings and change the background and font colors ON YOUR MACHINE.
I’d tell you how in detail but I’d have to figure it out myself again, first. You can do that.
How did I miss that.
Is it on FR home page or the all forum page—the latter is where I’d like it.
Thanks much.
I cannot decide if the green is dreadful or atrocious, so I compromise by saying it is both dreadful and atrocious.
Royal blue and kelly green on white are very low-contrast, eye-tiring combinations. Bright red too.
Can we have an option to turn them darker, or off?
