Obama on small-town PA: Clinging religion, guns, xenophobia
Politico.com ^ | 04/11/08 | Ben Smith

Posted on 04/11/2008 1:08:33 PM PDT by JRochelle

Mayhill Fowler has more from Obama's remarks at a San Francisco fundraiser Sunday, and they include an attempt to explain the resentment in small-town Pennsylvania that won't be appreciated by some of the people whose votes Obama's seeking:

You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them...And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.

And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

That's pretty broad list of things to explain with job loss.

Odumbo is dangerously close to seeing himself as the Moral Commander-In-Chief. He actually thinks he can solve the world’s problems.

He points out what’s wrong with America with the ‘superior objective wisdom’ Rev. Wright displays in his sermons. He’s Rev. Wright Lite.

I am a resident of a Western PA small town, much like the Magic Negro describes. There are burnt-out steel mills 10 miles to the north and 10 miles to the south.

Yet, somehow my little burg has near full employment, churches that are full every Sunday, great public schools, little to no crime, and a wonderful sense of community. I bought a three-bedroom house on 2 acres a decade ago for less than six digits, and it is just about paid off. My salary is enough to allow my wife to stay home and raise our three kids.

Tell me one urban area in the country where such a lifestyle is possible if you are not already independently wealthy?

Finally, I don’t recall getting any notices for Klan meetings recently - in fact, blacks and whites here (yes, even the few Mexicans we have) seem to get along just fine.

That being said, we do like our guns here. If people like the Magic Negro ever attempt to interfere with our Second Amendment rights, he and his ilk will find out just how far we are willing to go to preserve our wonderful way of life.

Now, if we could just annex Philly to New Jersey, Pittsburgh to WVA, and Erie to New York - followed by dumping Harrisburg into the river - PA would be perfect (well, except for the weather...:-) )

That's the key to personal gain via power isn't it.

This story originated with a HuffPo self-described “citizen-journalist”, who taped the speech. She just said on CNN that at first she was`nt going to post the story out of fear of hurting the Obama campaign.

(This is too weird. I thought of ‘Obozo’ but changed it to ‘Odumbo’ and typed it in my post, and it fell below your photo of “Odumbo”.)

You people!

You're just typical white VRWC members! Why can you former slaveholders not understand that Algonquin J. Obama is the Golden-Tongued Anointed One that Allah and Jesus H. Christ have jointly and severally appointed to save you from your own gun-fondling, fundamentalist, post-industrial wannabe-workaholic white racist selves? It is all so simple. (Did I mention that you were white?)

The Big O loves you pale little people of European descent who inhabit strange rusty post-industrial bergs in PA. He loves you and knows what's best for you, despite your obvious racist, hegemonic, hetero-normative, petit bourgeois faults and a total lack of African ethnicity. Love, baby. Jack Kennedy Had it. Ted Kennedy had hundreds of gallons of it in his own car FCOL. John Kerry? Swift boat-loads of it. The Rev. Wright has it in spades. (Those first three guys are white, but they have overcome, are Democrats and thus forgiven.)

Republicans? The foul, planet-besmirching fiends! They have no love at all for the little people. Every man, woman, child, gay or homosexual, or member of a federally-protected minority group in this wold is going to die, and it's all the Republicans' fault. Bush, Cheney, and Halliburton! (repeat) Small wonder then, that come next election they will be driven from power by non-racist voters.

I swear I heard white Republicans spouting this same drivel while plotting to pass the SHamnesty bill along with Bush. I am really sick and tired of their bigotry towards hard working middle Americans.

CNN right now are really trashing Obama for this comment; I’m not watching the spitter, but I’m wondering if this comment sent a tingle up/down his leg? I’m sure that Obama will be Olbermann’s worst person of the world tonight! HAHAHAHAHA
