Stephen King: If You Can’t Read ‘Then You’ve Got, the Army, Iraq’
NewsBusters ^ | May 5, 2008 | Noel Sheppard

Posted on 05/05/2008 6:27:34 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Remember shortly before Election Day 2006 when Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) suggested that if you don't get a good education, "you get stuck in Iraq" (video available here)?

Well, last month, famed horror author Stephen King was speaking in front of a group of high school students at the Library of Congress, and he virtually made the exact same statement.

For those that can bear it, what follows is another in a long line of liberal media members bashing the military (embedded right, h/t Terry Ann):

I don't want to sound like an ad, a public service ad on TV, but the fact is if you can read, you can walk into a job later on. If you don't, then you've got, the Army, Iraq, I don't know, something like that. It's, it's not as bright. So, that's my little commercial for that.

Nice sentiment when the nation is at war, Stephen.

"You can try and twist and spin your words anyway you want Mr. King but what you in effect said was that if you are illiterate you can join the U.S. Armed forces, a completely unsupportable contention."

Exactly, King sounds like he's spewing the Democrat line.

I like his books but jeez, get a brain.

I’ve yet to see a movie made from a book that was anywhere near as good as the book. And it doesn’t seem to matter who the author is. I’m always disappointed when I see book-to-movie. The only one that came anywhere close was The Color Purple.

And In Cold Blood.

Actually, if you can’t read, you might have a tough time getting into the army.

The “Harry Potter” movies have always been quite close to the books.

This idiot obviously hit his head real hard when he was run over by that Republican back in 1999.

“I guess he feels ignorance and illiteracy are OK when the country needs cannon-fodder.”

I’d like to see him explain to someone in the service of our country that they’re “cannon fodder” and too dumb to realize it.

And that was probably because the BOOKS were so bad! LOL.

What's strange about King is The Stand requires mostly conservative (and Christian) thinking in order to write that epic.

King is liberal. ... I still like his writing and will continue purchasing his books.

Just let a Gila Monster and some Brown recluse spiders go in your house. You'll have twice the suspense with no tawdry tripe.

King is an idiot. I think his little accident rattled what limited grasp he had on reality right out of his head.

I refuse to waste my money supporting this or any other half-wit libtard hack.

It's nice that he has an opinion. He should stick to writing fiction and leave editorializing to the professionals.

I think that it should be said that Mr. King does an awful lot of good for the local community. Among the tings that come immediately to mind are building+financing a Little League ballpark (it was fully lit for night games...quite a place). He financed the UMaine swim team (for a time, he may still...) when money for it was cut as a part of Title IX bs. The Bangor Public Library received an "Anonymous Donation" (yup, really anonymous in a small town) of 3 million dollars as a part of their remodeling project.

This was just while I lived in Maine, I'm sure that he's done more since. Whatever his political views are, he pours his money back into the community with both hands, and I can appreciate that.

Clearly this arrogant lib neither knows nor works with anyone in the Army or he never would have made such a statement. Libs cannot exist without a smug sense of superiority. This way they can refuse to debate their ideas as they can chalk up disagreement with an inability to comprehend them. They can’t accept the fact that other people might be just as intelligent as they yet choose to believe differently.

King is yet another pompous lib elitist. Every person I’ve ever dealt with in the military (including the Army) has been quite intelligent, even unusually so in many cases. King knows nothing about what the modern military is about and they have little use for unintelligent “cannon fodder”.

Nothing to do with fools like him accept laugh at him. Mr. King has never served one day in the armed services of this country. If he had, he would know there really isn’t a market for dumb soldiers.

Perhaps Alexander the Great, Hannibal, or Ceaser needed a collection of idiots to win a battle, however I doubt that very much.

As for King, I haven’t read him in a while. After the Wizard and Glass, I thought his talent was in severe decline. I’ve seen nothing that convinces me otherwise.

Funny thing is, I know that Stephen King is personal friends with at least one soldier. I wonder how he squares that guy with his statement.

That was a serious injury maybe brain damage accounts for this .

The Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me were two movies superior to the King books they were based on. Actually, I liked Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption quite a bit, but the movie transcended it.

I live in a national guard town, and I support our troops, but I don’t support either the war or educational policies that limit the options of young men and women to any one career—military or otherwise.

Oh, so he's a lying snake to boot!

Imagine if he had said, he supports the Police but he doesn't support Police methods and procedures or the policies that limit the options of young men and women to any one career—police or otherwise, or he supports Doctors but he doesn't support Medical Science or the policies that limit their career options.

He shows his ass, not his patriotism!

King often makes crude comments. The man seems to be filled with a lot of hate.
