Clinton Remark on Robert Kennedy’s Killing Stirs Uproar
New York Times ^ | May 24, 2008 | KATHARINE Q. SEELYE

BRANDON, S.D. — Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton defended staying in the Democratic nominating contest on Friday by pointing out that her husband had not wrapped up the nomination until June 1992, adding, “We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California.”

Her remarks were met with quick criticism from the campaign of Senator Barack Obama, and within hours of making them Mrs. Clinton expressed regret, saying, “The Kennedys have been much on my mind the last days because of Senator Kennedy,” referring to the recent diagnosis of Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s brain tumor. She added, “And I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and in particular the Kennedy family was in any way offensive.”

Still, the comments touched on one of the most sensitive aspects of the current presidential campaign — concern for Mr. Obama’s safety. And they come as Democrats have been talking increasingly of an Obama/Clinton ticket, with friends of the Clintons saying that Bill Clinton is musing about the possibility that the vice presidency might be his wife’s best path to the presidency if she loses the nomination.

I don’t want to defend a clinton, but she’s being railroaded here. Her comment was taken way way out of context. What she said was historically accurate. the drive by media is pushing her out.

From Drudge, “Hillary says purpose was historical instances of candidates staying in race until late in primaries... In 1968: Dem Race was only 3 months along...

New Hampshire, first in nation, wasn’t until March 12. Kennedy didn’t even get into running until March 16. By June 4, 1968, date of California primary, there had only been 13 primaries... Kennedy was killed on June 5... “

Na, they’ve turned on her. They’ve told her to step down at this point. Remember, it’s the Times, they have no loyalty to anyone. Spineless principless trash.

WOW another hand-wringing prose.... Here I thought those 400 pages of John McCain's medical history was going to consume these papers of record. Hillary just swung a bat across OLD Teddy's nose because it was he that pronounced Obama as getting the Jack Kennedy legacy torch, whereas Hillary being a New York Senator was using the other brother Bobby, as her path to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue...

hopeful this same criterion will be applied to talking about McCain’s age as hoping he’ll have a heart attack

I hate to defend a Rapist or his wife, either, but this is just false outrage. She should have been smart enough to censor herself, but I don’t think she planned to plant the idea of someone’s shooting Obama.

By this time next year there will be a federal law against criticizing President Obama.

And Senator John SuckUp McCain will vote for it, on the grounds that he never saw an anti-free-speech law he didn’t like.

So is Bill the one throwing the ashtrays this time?

“My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right?” she said. “We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California.”

And yet... another lie! Rapist42 had it wrapped up in late March. Except for the Obama lackeys at NBC/MSNBC... the rest of the DBM is letting the bit¢h slide.

It was the last of the primaries though — Most delegates had been selected. I had a Poli Sci professor who said that Humphrey had the nomination locked up even without Kennedy’s assassination — others (many on this forum) aren’t so sure.

Yeah, right. Except she has made similar statements at least twice in the last three months:

It isn't now. CA with its mother lode of delegates has already voted. So Clinton's remarks make no sense. In '68, CA in June was important. Today, nothing like that could happen and turn the tide. What could? An assassination.

And to those who say, "I hate to defend her but -- " I suggest, just don't!

and how many VPs have gone on to become president lately??
Just one I can think of even remotely recently, Lyndon B. Johnson, after an asssination of, a Kennedy Keep musing, Bubba. After all, promotion by death is a Clinton theme.

In light of the RFK comment, a VP slot for HR could only be seen as converting her major rationale for her staying in the nomination race into a 4-year "watch".

I’m not at all outraged. I think it is hillarious and intriguing. I hope she wins in Denver.
